5 Reasons you didn’t get called for an interview (and how to bounce back!)
So, you spotted an ad for a job that was right up your street but got the bad news that you weren’t shortlisted for an interview? All is not lost, treat it as a lesson and avoid it happening it to you again with these 5 helpful tips.
1. You were overqualified – If you’re highly qualified and haven’t gotten a call back, it could be that you are considered to be too highly qualified. Are you aiming too low? If this is happening on a regular basis, make sure you aren’t selling yourself short!
2. You were underqualified – It’s definitely good to have ambition, but is it possible that you might need a reality check? If you feel you were the right fit, it could be an option to check in and see if they have feedback for you about areas you’re falling short in – do you just need to pay your dues and put in the time? Perhaps there is a need for you to upskill?
3. Your application was below standard – Did you send a poorly formatted document? Full of typos? Don’t hold your breath for a call but do learn from your mistakes. A lapse in concentration can happen to anyone, so get someone you trust to scan your CV and cover letter (you are sending a cover letter, aren’t you?) to feel 100% confident when you hit “Send”.
4. There were tech issues – Many companies are ill-equipped for mobile and do not accept links from Dropbox or Google Drive. Be prepared and send your CV in .doc or pdf to ensure you aren’t passed over. The dreaded ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is wired to scan a CV for keywords and phrases. Have another read of the job description and reflect the language throughout your CV. Always follow up with a call to make sure your CV or application has arrived safe and sound.
5. It happens to all of us – Pot luck, Murphy’s Law – whatever you choose to call it, you will look back on this as a blessing in disguise. Dust yourself off, learn from your mistakes and don’t it let it stop you for one second!
