1000 Days: Atlassian spills the findings in a new report

Today Atlassian released a new report called "Lessons Learned: 1,000 Days of Distributed at Atlassian". The report focused on 4 challenges, which most firms are facing today:

  • Productivity
  • Connection
  • Real estate ROI
  • Culture

I find it very interesting to see some of the statistics from this report. Look at this infographic below:

Part of my personal challenge with working remotely / distributed team work is bullet #2: Connection. I am an extrovert and have a great need to connect with people I work with. I have been working remotely for many years but at my last job, I was able to visit the office 2-3 times per year for couple weeks at a time. Atlassian found out:

  • Team gatherings increase team connection by 27%, and this boost lasts 4-5 months. New hires and new graduates experience the biggest boosts in team connection following an in-person gathering.

This is very fascinating; 4-5 months. So team building of some sort should be about 3 times per year. That could work!

As far as Productivity goes, Atlassian has been running ~3 experiments each quarter. Most recently, they found that:

when employees structured their time around priorities instead of meetings and notifications, they made faster progress and felt less overwhelmed. We reserve meetings for creativity, navigating complexity, driving momentum, and bonding, and aim to prioritize the work that matters most during async time.

This is another fascinating topic. Another insight from the report seems to be to "timebox" in order to reduce meetings:

  • Atlassians who participated in an experiment where they “timeboxed” their top priorities declined 17% more meetings than usual and spent 13% less time in meetings
