I’m excited to share our experiences from the recent Impact X Summit in Sydney, where my team and I had the opportunity to delve into pressing issues on sustainability. Here are the key takeaways from the major topics discussed: Transport & Infrastructure: Discussions emphasised the need for governments to effectively listen to both businesses and communities for right policy implementation. A broader view on a green and just transition is required, one that encompasses not only electric vehicles but also other modes of transportation and collaborative planning efforts. Agriculture and Land Use: We addressed the significant challenge of methane emissions, with current solutions not keeping pace with ambitious marketing. The development of a peer-to-peer platform for sharing knowledge among farmers, scientists, and land stewards could greatly accelerate progress towards innovative, sustainable practices. Energy: The importance of a consistent and relatable government narrative to support the 'why' of energy transition was clear, paired with regulatory reform to facilitate the use of both existing and emerging technologies. Built Environment: We focused on a 'hierarchy of action' to enhance decarbonisation efforts: avoiding new construction when unnecessary, modifying existing structures to reduce resource use, and implementing stringent offset policies. National regulation, increased transparency, and cross-sector collaboration are pivotal. Industry and Manufacturing: Sustainable change in this sector hinges on strong partnerships among businesses, governments, and communities. Coordination of initiatives from both top-down and bottom-up approaches is essential for building capabilities and capacity. These insights not only enrich our understanding but also reinforce Kearney’s commitment to our clients as we work together toward a more sustainable and equitable world. A fabulous few days with the Kearney team at #ixsydney2024. Two days of interesting conversations with like-minded people with a shared vision to accelerate sustainability progress across businesses, government and communities. 💡Key takeaways for me: 1️⃣ Indigenous-led science: First Nations peoples have extensive knowledge of land, biodiversity and nature - how can we harness this in our solutions to create holistic, sustainable impact? 2️⃣ Place based approach: there is no ‘one-size fits all’ and most communities already have the answers we need. For long-term, tangible impact we need to adopt a place-based approach that hits the core of what is important to that region. 3️⃣ Collaborative partnerships: the answer is not action from stakeholders working in parallel, but rather partners, collaborating from the lens of creating solutions that enable shared value creation for a particular industry or community. 🌟 Some mentionable highlights: 1️⃣ Keynote from our awesome colleague Kate Hart presenting our APAC Ambition to Execution study. 2️⃣ An update on the latest science from Johan Rockstrom, including data on how we are currently overshooting on 6/9 planetary boundaries, highlighting the need for accelerated action. 3️⃣ The built environment working group (including a panel discussion moderated by our very own Chris Melck) where we talked about the hierarchy of solutions: avoid, modify and offset, and what the policy, tech and collaboration enablers are to accelerate much needed action. 4. The challenge from Paul Hawken that we cannot dissociate climate from nature and that we need to stop relying on ‘climate jargon’ (the physio in me loved the reference to carbon tunnel syndrome) and start coupling decarbonisation with regenerative biodiversity solutions. Looking forward to continuing the conversation!
