Munich-based driveblocks closed a €2.2 million Seed funding round, led by Rethink Ventures and Bayern Kapital GmbH, with angel investor Joachim Drees and existing investor Friedrich & Wagner Holding GmbH also participating. The company develops technologies for autonomous driving commercial vehicles, specifically the Mapless Autonomy Platform. This platform relies on modular software components for processing raw data, real-time vehicle environment recognition and sensor data fusion. Unlike map-based approaches, driveblocks enables autonomous driving through perception, i.e., sensor-based recognition of the environment. British self-driving startup Wayve raised $1bn from NVIDIA, SoftBank, Microsoft and more. Wayve uses cameras and sensors to map out its environmental surroundings. This mapping ensures that cars can safely navigate densely populated urban areas with little to no human supervision. The company is focused on developing “embodied AI” technology for self-driving vehicles, which features AI that can understand and adapt to unpredictable realities in the physical world. For example, a car powered by self-driving technology driving down a residential road would need to be equipped for unpredictable situations such as jaywalking. #embodiedai

SoftBank, a Japanese conglomerate, is spearheading a funding effort of over $1 billion for UK-based self-driving car startup Wayve. This investment marks Europe's largest artificial intelligence deal to date. Alongside SoftBank, participants in this funding round include Nvidia and Wayve's existing investor, Microsoft. These funds will empower Wayve to implement its autonomous systems in vehicles in the near future. Wayve's AI technology enables vehicles to learn while in operation, eliminating the necessity for expensive mapping and laser-based sensors. This approach has the potential to expedite the launch of self-driving cars, reducing costs compared to their US counterparts.
