First, robot taxis. Why not robot food delivery? It's a natural extension of AVs and one student startup in Edinburgh is betting on it being the future of takeaways. It makes sense. Simply put the food in the car and off it goes, keeping costs down. Access to public transportation in rural areas is an important and sometimes overlooked challenge. According to research published by Center for Rural Policy and Development, public transit systems provided approximately 12 million rides in Greater Minnesota in 2014. In conducting that research, the Center also discovered that more than 50% of transit riders in Greater Minnesota didn't have a car or a driver's license. For even smaller rural systems, that stat rose to 70%. We supported the goMARTI project with three grants totaling $550,000 to explore transportation solutions for non-drivers in Grand Rapids, including autonomous vehicles. We recently began field testing autonomous driving on rural roadways and we couldn’t be happier with the results!! 👍 A Versatile tractor, outfitted with EYEBOX, successfully traveled without human intervention across rural roads, from a starting location to a predetermined final destination. EYEBOX navigation is not only designed for field coverage missions, but is easily adapted for any general automation task. Mojow has previously collected more than 5 terabytes (TB) of clean and well-structured data from rural road driving (including gravel / dirt roads, and double track trails). We are using this data to train our machine learning models for detecting the drivable area on roadways. With Waymo announcing the company is now conducting 50,000 paid rides per week in 3 cities, we decided to add some economic context to the announcement. Based on our analysis, Waymo is generating anywhere between $500,000 to just over a $1,000,000 a week in revenue depending on the average fare.
