Did you know that healthcare is one of the lowest-ranked industries in adopting digital- and AI-powered tools? The industry is just behind hunting/agriculture and construction. When health systems build solutions internally, it can often be a slow process. At our CFO Council, Feby Abraham, EVP and Chief Strategy Officer, Memorial Hermann Health System challenged attendees to move from a “build” approach towards a “buy” approach to increase speed to market and continue to differentiate offerings within complex and competitive markets.

I was motivated to dive into an idea that is revolutionizing our approach to sustained growth: the evolution of a personal board of advisors. Across our rapidly growing animal health and biotech businesses, where innovation and adaptability are keys to staying ahead, this concept has proven invaluable but also in need of modernizing. Gone are the days when a personal board was merely a roster of seasoned mentors for sporadic advice. Today, it represents a vibrant ecosystem of diverse thought leaders—from digital health innovators to sustainability champions—each contributing unique perspectives that challenge and enrich our strategic compass. Spanning multiple sectors like we do, where the pace of change is not just relentless but varied, this diversity is not just beneficial; it’s essential. My personal board acts as a beacon, guiding us through the complexities of modern markets with insights on emerging trends, tech innovation, and consumer behavior shifts. Their collective wisdom has been a cornerstone in not just navigating but thriving amidst the dynamic demands of the biotech and animal health industry. In particular, their insight on future directions have been instrumental in ramping our BD efforts. For fellow leaders aiming to sustain existing growth rates, consider constructing your personal board. It's more than an advisory panel; it's a strategic asset that can propel you to think broader, act faster, and lead with an edge in today's competitive arena.
