📣 New job klaxon! Time to change the world.   I have spent most of the last decade designing, building, and growing start-up businesses. Some success and some failure, always interesting and inspiring. After my last start up I decided to take a break and help raise our brand spanking new daughter Sofia and re-connect with our families through the very real power of baby cuddles in our native Serbia and Australia.   Another baby power is reflection. My next challenge needed some meaning outside of myself. I had some criteria for what came next.   🙏 Something that contributed to a more sustainable world.   🙏 Healthy for people because I have spent too long building financial market user experiences which cause problems.    🙏 Physical and digital because I believe digital products will be hugely disrupted by AI, and I want to build something people can feel.  🙏 Brilliant vision and culture in its bones. Recent start-up experience has left me in no doubt what happens when you compromise on this.  My old boss at Britvic Noel Dickson and colleague Scott MacKenzie and I started talking about how they wanted to build the most sustainable water brand in the world and thought that was something I might be interested in. You might not know that about me, but Nilus wasn’t my first time at the startup rodeo.     At the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey, my good friend Amit Dadon and I started an ideation process, after working together in Fundbox. Knowing how important sustainability is for younger employees, we set out with the thesis that creating sustainable activities for employees could be a tool to attract and retain talent and cost savings for the employer. We analyzed the market and learned that most big companies have CSR roles (Corporate Social Responsibility) and have committed to delivering impact in the sustainability world. We found an interesting problem in that space - these CSR functions don't have the right tools to engage the employees to reach those commitments. We came up with an idea: creating a way for employees to initiate sustainability-related projects. We wanted to build a few initiatives that would be measurable and have a clear impact. To that end, we focused on electricity use, commuting, recycling, and creating a platform for the person responsible for sustainability in the company. For a few months, we tried validating our idea - and, long story short, the process led us to the decision that we should drop it.  However, I learned a lot from the experience - especially that it's not enough to have an innovative idea - you need to have a big enough market. In that case, since the CSR market is still in its early days, it wasn’t the right time (and in startups, timing is everything :). Shortly after that, I started to look for other directions. I reunited with an old friend Daniel Kalish, and founded Nilus - far from the sustainability space. However, I still believe that sustainability is entwined in every company’s future and encourage founders who are interested in that space to learn from our experience.
