It is another fabulous Friday 😀 and I am back with another post aligned to my love of the game of Rugby and how it aligns to Management. Today I want to talk to you about Inclusion and Diversity, both in my beloved game of Rugby and in the workplace. I recently read in Introduction to Inclusive Volunteering.pdf (englandrugby.com) that: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship – these are the core values of rugby that inform the culture. There is powerful evidence from the world of work that building a diverse and inclusive organisation has a far-reaching impact on effectiveness, efficiency, culture and employee happiness. It got me to thinking that this is a vision that every team and workplace, could align to. It is the holy grail as far as what I would hope to achieve in any Team or organisation that I work in and understanding and implementing are the two most important aspects of any managers role in my opinion. Do you know what Diversity looks like? Diversity describes the range of people in your Team. - ages, - religions, - ethnicities, - disabilities, - men and women. It also means valuing each and every one of those differences. This leads into Inclusion: This is a workplace where everyone of your beautifully unique team, feels valued at work and that they feel safe to. - Share their ideas - raise issues and suggestions in an environment where this is encouraged and they are heard - try doing things in a different way, with backing from their manager and Team Take a look at your team, are they modelling the values of Diversity and Inclusion? Have you ever cringed at the cliché, "We're a family" when it's used in a business setting? We don't regard our people as a group of cosy relatives. We view us as a sports team that's comprised of some of the best players on the pitch! At the end of the day, recruitment is a sales business. And having a sports team mentality helps us to win. Although we may have star players. We win as a team and we lose as a team. In our game, every player needs to be at their peak and contribute their best. Having a sports team mentality means that as a unit we can - 🏅Celebrate standout individuals 🏅Drive the collective effort 🏅Celebrate overall victories 🏅Learn from setbacks We lift each other up to achieve the final goals. Shifting the narrative from "family" to "team" supports a culture where every member feels valued. It keeps employees motivated, and ready to give their all. Being a part of a team taps into the human need for belonging. We spend our life looking to belong - -Class A -Form group B -Football team -Netball team But the truth is that working towards something collectively, rather than individually, harnesses greater results. People feel more supported and less stressed when they’re part of a team. #team #workplaceculture #recruitment

To be a ‘team player’ one needs to be sure footed. To have confidence requires competence and the ability to not worry too much about what people think of us. When people play politics in teams - sport, corporate, family - be assured that there lurks incompetence and the fear of being discovered for it. The fear of exposure makes many a person want to use other means to get by. Add to that a belief that one must always be liked and appreciated, leading people to not voice their true emotions. Resentment builds. How can one be a ‘team player’ when one is aggrieved? ‘Team work’ is not living in a fools paradise by acknowledging one’s limitations. Is this a prime example of skill vs culture fit?? There has been lots of football pundits (and wannabe pundits) wading in to air their concerns with the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the new England Coach. A man with a track record of success but whose appointment potentially leaves a distaste in the mouths of English fans across the world. The BBC put it well when they suggested that this will be regarded by many as a betrayal of the much-touted pathway from the national team's headquarters at St George’s Park to the top and an insult to home-grown managerial talent. Is this the same scenario that happens when your existing team members are over looked for a role in favour of bringing in an external candidate?? The internal candidate absolutely knows the cultural and already has an internal brand (good or bad!). Sometimes it is just time to bring in an external candidate, even more so if you are seeking a change or challenge to the status quo - rightly or wrongly. Looking down the track 6 months, 1 year, 3 years will the top execs at St George's Park live to rue their decision, or maybe, just maybe have they gone with the unpopular candidate who may bring the difference to win that trophy which has evaded England fans since 1966. Team Catalyst ! So the England Football team didn't quite make it . They didn't quite achieve what they wanted to achieve, Does that mean they give up and quit ? Give up football, stop trying? NO...of course not What it actually means is that they are going to try even harder next time. what they are going to do is to take some time to reflect on what they could have done differently, learn from any mistakes that may have been made, and think about what changes they might need to make to be even more successful next time. Will they carry on training and putting strategies and plans into place ?
