Do you have a SUPERPOWER? This week, I had the pleasure of facilitating the Speed Networking Sessions at the Professional Development Days at General Motors alongside my partner in crime, Ashley Randall. The sessions were about meeting new people, with a layer of #inclusion. Around 1500 participants had to connect with someone they had never met and share how their #superpowers helped others or themselves feel included. I decided to be vulnerable and share my little personal way of using mine and how these amazing people at #gm help me do it. Companies are made by people. People make companies. THINKING OUT LOUD: I read and have read volumes on group dynamics over many years. I absorbed all manner of complex data gathering and analytics. After a while, it became clear that overcomplicating the process of communication lead only to more futility. In the end, this is what I concluded: People readily jump on board and willingly participate when morale is high. So, let's focus on respect and psychological safety and stop worrying about having to measure everything. Cohesiveness is paramount. Wisdom in leadership creates cohesiveness. Creating inclusion in the world always starts with one thing: 𝗟 𝗜 𝗦 𝗧 𝗘 𝗡 𝗜 𝗡 𝗚! I'd like you to hear me out for a second.🙏 You cool with that? Thank you so much for being here. Most of us think "our way is the normal way." We don't even give our way of seeing things a second thought. It is just the right way to be. But have you ever traveled anywhere and seen that "oh, another person's way is normal to them"? We often walk around the world thinking, "Our way is the right way," because it is what we know. Something extraordinary happens at Sidewalk Talk. Because we encourage folks to go out and listen often and see it as a practice of inclusion, you do start to feel different. You begin to realize that different people see the world differently, live differently, value different things, and need other things to feel like they have a good life. And when you hear these amazing stories your whole life feels really vibrant and bright because your own life experience expands. Then you are more joyful, kinder, more curious, and more inclusive with folks who are different than you in your everyday life. To us, that is creating a better world. Happy Tuesday! I hope your July is off to a wonderful start. Every day, I find an opportunity to begin again. Scaling in a business context often involves the ability to move beyond parameters. It’s about being able to serve a larger audience. Inclusion provides the gateway to that audience.
