Market "VISIT" Which sales person doesn’t remember market visits by “Top Management” More senior the visitor, the more the preparations and more unrealistic the expectations from the team 😊 And for the MNC sales professionals, the International Visitors are the tops. The market visits are a good time to see the “hold” of the team on their market. The cooperation required from the outlet owners is high…and in most cases they also participate with enthusiasm. Whatever be the outcome of the visit, many memories/stories remain. Absolutely true , While these market visits could be a nightmare given the meticulous “route planning “ that had to be done , given that in every route there were always 1 or 2 “rogue “ outlets who wouldn’t cooperate 😃, it could also be the making of a sales guys career depending on the importance of the visit and the success of the visit . While the visitors would also understand that the markets will be decked up , a fully merchandised market show cased the power of the brand and the relationship of the people in the frontline . I would like to recall one particular visit by the sales head (for an SO,this is the toughest visit as the sales head knows the ins and outs) , after having decided the route and the outlets to be visited and the mandatory multiple market checks by the ASM/RSM of the area , on the D-Day instead of the local SO , it was the ASM who was asked to join in the sales heads car . Even-though the ASM knew the route but to still make it foolproof and to ensure that no turns were missed , along with the pilot car with the SO, 2 other SO’s surreptitiously followed the main car and kept a close watch😃 Thus ended a most stressful day as one of the highlights of my career which is still recall vividly and fondly .

Over years of market visits, I realized few insights : a) No amount of decking up can fool those who spent years in market visits. b) it’s a great way to get the selected markets to get a face lift. And if you plan market visits well and time them right, your key markets will always stay bright c) If you are not fanatical about that one pack not aligned or one poster not stuck straight, your teams will not kill themselves while decking up and skip other imp work. d) And if your visits aren’t ‘feared’ but welcomed, given your in-market conduct ( and a fabulous meal for all), you will end up gaining invaluable ’honest’ insights as well. e) And if you can help them solve some festering issues during market visits, you will be loved.

Market visits were an almost full time occupation during the early years of Coca Cola. Any goof up could be viewed seriously. While it was not worth the time spent on it, the positive part was that the market visibility would get upgraded .
