My thoughts are with the people of the #Caribbean as #Hurricane Beryl approaches the Windward Islands with potentially life-threatening winds and coastal flooding. The US National Hurricane Center, which is the World Meteorological Organization regional centre, has issued Hurricane Warnings for Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago. Never has a tropical cyclone intensified so rapidly to Category 3/4 so early in the season. This season is expected to be extremely active, not least because of very warm ocean temperatures. Small islands are on the frontline of extreme weather and #climatechange impacts and are priorities for many WMO initiatives and for #EarlyWarningsForAll. Two early tropical storms, #Remal in India and Bangladesh, and #Aghon in the Philippines, indicate the impact of climate change as the tropical storm season advances. Here's a great resource from Colorado State University's Tropical Weather & Climate Research. They list the likelihood of states AND counties to have a named storm or #hurricane this year. They are using a "new methodology for calculating the impacts of tropical cyclones for each state and county/parish along the Gulf and East Coasts, tropical cyclone-prone provinces of Canada, Atlantic-facing states of coastal Mexico, islands in the Caribbean and countries in Central America." https://lnkd.in/g4SVCeZz

Atmospheric G2 is closely monitoring the latest water vapor satellite imagery which shows a broad circulation in the upper layers of the atmosphere located over the southeastern Gulf and down through the far western Caribbean. I would expect the National Hurricane Center to upgrade this tropical system by this weekend as it gradually moves northwestward from the western Caribbean to the southwestern Gulf of Mexico (Bay of Campeche). Long-range weather models track the tropical system on a similar path as Tropical Storm Alberto into Mexico.

This year’s #hurricane could be especially active because of the La Nina weather phenomenon and warm waters in the #Atlantic Ocean, the meteorology firm AccuWeather said on Tuesday. In 2024, El Nino should transition into La Nina during the second half of the hurricane season, AccuWeather said. La Nina encourages the formation of storms. Another factor that could contribute to a busy hurricane season is the unusually #warm waters in the Atlantic Ocean, Accuweather said. Already, water temperatures cross the Atlantic are at levels that are typical of mid-July.
