🚨Warning: Long overdue post. Here’s to 3 rotations around the sun @ Ogilvy (and 26 around the sun this week) I’m extremely grateful. It’s hard to give yourself kudos when you’re forever racing against time in advertising (which feels like 10 mins). Part of the fun is never knowing the amount of impact you have on a brand & its audience.
In honor of my Ogilversary, here’s some highlights from my journey:
📱Social Media is fake. Keeping documentation of your life isn’t - As a Gen Zer, I know socials tendency to create narratives that aren’t true, but I’ve been able to build & grow social for brands through design & art direction😂. Only my manager & mentor know how hard I kicked & screamed about ever being an AD. Little did I know I’d love it. In the last 4 years, I’ve been able to build a personal account that has cultivated a community. I’ve made so many friends & collabed with brands because of a little app called TikTok. And now I take those learnings to work to build good content. The lesson you ask? Never under estimate socials power, no matter how scared you are. {Maybe I’ll take my own advice & start to build a better presence on LinkedIn}.
🤝I’ve learned to build a community vs. networking for impressions - Numbers don’t matter. They’re just a flashy way of getting people’s attention. But intentionally building a community that you can lean on and learn from, that’s the real reward. I’ve learned the art of simply being comfortable in spaces I never thought I belonged. I’m super grateful for the opportunity to learn that with opportunities to be a CCDC ambassador, an ADCOLOR Future, a Juror on the D&AD New Blood Awards, & more.
✋🏽Set boundaries sis. We don’t wanna see “Yes Woman” on your tombstone - I’m learning to say yes to the things that I have the time & energy for. I’m famous for overextending & doing everything because that’s what I was taught. Work hard. Until burn out meets you at your doorstep. While it looks different for everyone, I’ve done a terrible job at acknowledging it because the creative ideas never stopped flowing. Why chill out? I’m learning to take on what I can & pass on the rest. The bonus is I get to pass the opportunities to my creative community who are just as amazing if not better for the opportunity than myself #circulatethewealth
🎊 Ogilvy is like a home. Since college I’ve found myself building the life I wanted to live, the position I wanted to work, and the experiences I wanted to have and that’s been a trend for me. But Ogilvy makes it easier when the people I’ve been able to look up to have set me up for success. No matter what year you’re hired, when you leave, or if you’re a boomerang, the ongoing community of people who are forever Ogilvyers is dope. In DC we’ve paved our own unique path & to be able to have powerful female leaders to look up to is 🤌🏽So thank you to all the peeps who are making this journey so enjoyable & for all the lessons I’ve been able to borrow (and pour into others).
