Pioneer Architect of the Week Frei Otto (1925 - 2015) Frei Paul Otto was a German architect and structural engineer known for his use of lightweight structures, in particular tensile and membrane structures. He won the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 2006 and the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2015. He founded the Institute for Lightweight Structures at the University of Stuttgart and was head of the department from 1964 to his retirement. Otto tried new methods to reduce material and energy use to create space and experimented with natural objects such as soap bubbles, bird skulls, and spider webs. Some of his notable works: 1. Olympic Stadium - Munich, Germany (1972) 2. Umbrellas for Pink Floyd’s Concert Tour - United States (1977) 3. International and Universal Exposition - Montreal, Canada (1967) 4. 🚀⚛️ Cool and educational on bridges and prestressing systems. A prestressed anchorage system is a crucial component in bridge engineering. Bridges are subject to loads such as dead loads (permanent weight), live loads (traffic), wind, and other forces. Therefore, prestressed concrete technology is employed to counteract these forces and enhance the bridge's strength and durability. 🌉Prestressing involves applying forces to the concrete before it bears loads, to counteract tensile stress. Anchorage systems securely hold the prestressing strands in place.
