"What difference does it make to someone’s life if they are able to get out into their local park? Here’s Colin’s story. Colin first got involved with Your Park as part of a project to assess and improve the accessibility of our parks from first-hand accounts. During his time with us, his dedication and insight into the challenges faced by Disabled park users led Colin to lead the access assessment of Hartcliffe Millennium Green. The group discovered significant barriers that prevent full use of parks, even at the front gate. Heavy entrance gates that are hard to open, a lack of accessible parking and toilets, and inadequate pathways and facilities, are all challenges a non-Disabled person might never consider. But it is crucial that everybody does. 🗣️ Colin shares: “Your Park has been working hard to highlight the fact that minorities suffer from unequal access to parks and green spaces - this includes Disabled people, women and girls, people from ethnic backgrounds as well as those from poorer backgrounds. This is an issue that often goes unhighlighted within society but one, I feel, is vital. Research shows that being able to access a park or green space improves people's health both mentally and physically. In addition, Your Park is putting co-production with the local community and lived experiences at the core of its project delivery. This is important because it means the communities and people who will be using the parks and green spaces can have their voices front and centre.” Help us reach more people by donating today.
