Today is World Philanthropy Day… and just over a week until the holiday season of giving kicks off. Did you know that the Greek root of philanthropy can be literally translated as "loving people"? We can’t think of a better way to love people than making sure we plan for and invest into their future. WakeUP, like most nonprofits, is dependent on the generosity of donors that value our work and help us make a difference in the lives of residents across Wake County as we plan for tomorrow TODAY. Growth is happening across Wake County because this is an amazing place to live and we want to make sure that it stays that way for all people AND natural resources. We spend most of the year keeping you updated on all things sustainable planning across Wake County, but this time of year we will be asking for your help and support! Hey funders, I’m seeing many of you post content that acknowledges that Native communities receive a minuscule amount of philanthropic dollars; that people of color must be centered in racial equity efforts; that trans-led organizations have limited access to funding opportunities; and that the lack of affordable housing, food, healthcare, mental health services, and childcare are ongoing stressors that disproportionately impact marginalized communities. We know. We know that extractive practices have led to wealth accumulation and enormous wealth gaps. We know that the philanthropy industry was born from white supremacy culture. We know that nonprofits have exacerbated this issue by centering funders and donors, so much so that nonprofits have infantilized donors, fearing that any disagreement or discomfort will lead to a tantrum and pulled funding. We know this when we look at the data. We see this when we look around and wonder what could be accomplished if we had the needed financial resources. We feel this during every conference session, grant application process, and coffee hour/venting session. We don’t need another article or post as a reminder. We need to know what you’re doing about it. Specifically, what are you doing with your philanthropic dollars to end this? Please share how you’ve evolved your philanthropic approaches to redistribute wealth and power, in an effort to correct the inequitable and unjust realities our communities face. REACT DC's REACTwomen Event and MOMNetwork CEO Collaboration 👭 Last month, REACT DC hosted a REACTwomen event where we discussed the challenges of raising children while balancing religious and cultural diversity in the United States. The event featured a collaboration with MOMNetwork CEO Shellie McKinney, fostering a dialogue on this important topic. Diaper and Goods Distribution at REACT DC 🎁 During the event, REACT DC conducted a Diaper and Goods distribution, providing essential childcare items to families in need. This was made possible through the support of the Greater DC Diaper Bank which supplies REACT DC with 5,000 diapers per month. Additionally, we distributed safe period products from the Begin Again Foundation and facilitated a large-scale clothing distribution leveraging community donations. This is so right. As someone running a community based organization in an underserved, underfunded, and overpolluted community, I see time and again how institutions reinforce systemic inequities while saying they care about dismantling injustice. It feels like a treadmill sometimes, just watching the resources flow to the established institutional organizations. Whether you're a foundation or agency or individual, if you care about justice and equity, please evaluate why you make the funding decisions you do and if your funding is going to the places you want it to. I see too many government funders pass up funding in underserved communities where the funding would be a game changer because a well resourced organization had a better pitch, or had the capacity to do the work right away, etc. If you actually want to address inequities, look at who is not applying. Consider that your funding will go further if part of your funding actually goes to build capacity. Ask well-resourced organizations to help smaller organizations get the funding.
