“We will celebrate what makes us different, show there is strength in difference, beauty in difference and that difference serves as a powerful force for good.” That's what the International Paralympic Committee said. At Channel 4 we say ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT. ParalympicsGB have written an open letter to Government insisting that disabled children have access to sport. There are 16 million disabled people in the UK and 1.5 million disabled kids in schools. All of them should have access to sport and to play. In the way they want, for them. Only 1 in 5 do. I am delighted to see us put this ad out today after we welcomed home the athletes last night in Birmingham with their wonderful 124 medals. 1,433 days until the Paralympics in LA. Now is the time for change. Let's not wait.

London 2012 put paralympic achievement in the spotlight; Birmingham 2022 put it centre stage; Paris 2024 showed again how spectacular it is. Nevertheless, Alex Mahon provides a reminder here of how much still needs to be done to achieve inclusive sport and sporting opportunities. The effort already has sporting heroes like gold medalists Grace Harvey and Ellie Simmonds (to name just two) and non-competing champions like Janet Warrington and Nicola Turner MBE, but will need everyone onboard to create opportunities for participation by the million or more youngsters currently missing out. What can you do to become a local hero and promote sporting opportunities for disabled people in your area?

It is amazing to see how far we have come as a society to incorporate people of all abilities into sports today. Since 1960, the Paralympics participants have increased by nearly 10x. There are now 22 different summer sports and 6 winter sports in which Paralympics athletes can compete in. Media coverage has also increased, including the streaming service Peacock which offered 1,400 hours of Paralympic events in 2024. On a lower level, there are over three million kids who participate in Unified Sports or Special Olympics within America. On a global level, there are over six million current participants. In the past half decade, the Unified Sports world has gained nearly ten thousand more athletes. It is truly incredible to watch how the sports world has reacted and added more organizations and sports for those with mental and physical disabilities to participate in. #paralympics #unifiedsports #specialolympics #motivating

Inclusion & representation is so important 👏

Forbes shares three things we can learn from the summer paralympic games this summer in Paris. 1. Don't overdose on inspiration - while we can be inspired by their disabled athletes, let's focus on their commitment, their training and their achievements and less about their disability. 2. Paralympic sports provide lessons -- in achievement, adaptations and desire to be great in a sport that speaks to you. We can all relate to this. 3. Paralympic games are fun to watch - we all like to watch people achieve great things. This is true in both the Olympic games and Paralympic games. #DisabledAndCapable #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityCompetitive Andrew Pulrang | International Paralympic Committee https://bit.ly/3TWhYFY

My Olympic ponderance As the Olympics get into full swing and I personally look forward to the Paralympics, it's crucial to reflect on the true meaning of "parallel." (Parallel to the Olympics). Currently, the Paralympics follow the Olympics, rather than running alongside them. This separation suggests a disparity in how we view athletes with disabilities compared to their non-disabled counterparts. Imagine a world where the Paralympics and Olympics happen concurrently, showcasing all athletes' achievements and abilities on the same stage. This would not only highlight the incredible talents of Paralympians but also promote a culture of inclusivity and equality in sports. #Inclusivity #Paralympics #Olympics #EqualityInSports

This sounds like it's out the "Safety Third" approach to life. #1 have fun, #2 take a photo, #3 safety. On a serious note though, what a great way to bring to life sports and accessibility. We don't win and lose, we win and learn. Feeling the sharp end of sport is part and parcel of sport. These experiences help build confidence and wisdom. Well done Channel 4

The Paralympic Games are a celebration of human achievement and diversity. Yet, as we enter the final week, it’s disappointed to see barriers to accessibility and inclusion persist. One significant issue is the lack of widespread television coverage. While the International Paralympic Committee offers a free #YouTube channel, many countries have restricted access due to exclusive broadcasting rights. This is a missed opportunity to promote inclusivity and showcase the incredible talents of Paralympic athletes. How can we truly embrace accessibility and inclusion if we can’t even watch the competitions? Let’s advocate for more equitable broadcasting practices and ensure that everyone has the chance to witness these inspiring events." #Paralympics #Accessibility #Inclusion #Sports #Equity https://lnkd.in/dAHYj6RW

["Special Olympics is not the Paralympics. I've been hearing a lot of 'You must be busy!' and 'Why aren't you in Paris?' , though as the 2024 Paralympics wind down, I thought I'd make some distinctions between these games and the Special Olympics.] - Pierre Comis I'm following up on what Pierre said to help building awareness about the Special Olympics , It's good to know the difference and share it with others! #SpecialOlympics (where I volunteered at the #BerlinWorldGames2023 👇📸) serves individuals with intellectual disabilities. Events are held year-round, and the World Games occur every two years. It's open to individuals of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced athletes. #Paralympics serves athletes with physical disabilities and is a competitive event held right after the Olympic Games. Athletes must meet qualifying standards, and classification ensures fair competition based on impairment type and severity. Each organization is designed to meet different needs, and both are valuable in promoting #inclusion and opportunity for people with disabilities.
