An international study on homophobia and transphobia in sport done in 2015 by Out on the Fields found that 80% of participants have witnessed or experienced homophobia, with homophobic language being the most common case. When we work towards using inclusive language and behaviour, and fostering safer spaces, we can eradicate abuse in sport and make every athlete welcome to participate with their whole self. #Reflexivepractice As the Paris Olympics begin, I want you to consider the inequality that exists in Olympic sports. The racism, sexism, abelism, transphobia, homophobia, intersexphobia and classism. I know we think of the meme below as some standard for equity and equality, but what if you are not looking at the bigger picture. What if equity and inclusion were the people (with diverse genders etc) on the field instead of the sidelines? What if it was community members playing the game? In international development, what if it is community members on project teams, co-designing, co-implimenting and co-evaluating? It’s great to watch elite sports aka the “professionals”, but it is also good reflective practice to deeply consider who is unable to participate, because of structural inequalities that seem so ‘normal and natural’ that we can’t even imagine them anywhere but the sidelines. So, the #reflexivepractice question(s) today is, what other lenses can we use to see things differently to how we typically see them? What can we learn from this exercise? #GEDSI #internationaldevelopment #socialinclusion

But despite all the progress we have seen there is still so much to be done to challenge the many inequalities faced by disabled people in sport and physical activity.
