This is Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale, FL. Picturesque. Serene. The meeting point of the city's maritime roots and its future as a metropolitan powerhouse. It also floods during the king tides on a sunny day. The grand disconnect of the built environment and the people that it serves starts with an industry that stopped telling a story about itself. Why do we build? What is at stake? Why should people care? Who does it serve exactly? It's maddening when the story really tells itself. Can people engineer a way to coexist with a planet that is rapidly changing the way we live our lives? Can an industry that rested it laurels on cost/benefit analysis capture the attention of society the same way the space race defined a generation? Its not all doom and gloom, its change. However the way we speak about it should be at the forefront of the future of Engineering.

Happy Engineer's Day to all the brilliant minds who design, build, and inspire progress. As we celebrate the impact of engineering on our world, I find myself reflecting on my own journey as an engineer. Engineering wasn’t just a profession I chose—it was a path that taught me invaluable life lessons, shaping not only my career but also the person I’ve become. 🔧 Engineering taught me resilience—the perseverance to keep going when challenges seemed insurmountable. 📐 It instilled problem-solving - seeing every obstacle as an opportunity for creativity. ⚙️ It nurtured collaboration - the understanding that great things happen when minds come together. 🛠️ And most importantly, it gave me a mindset of curiosity- always learning, always growing. As I look back on those days, I’m filled with gratitude for the journey. Today, I stumbled upon my convocation photo, and it took me back to that moment of accomplishment. It reminds me that the passion and drive we cultivate as engineers remain with us, no matter where our paths lead. We are highlighting our engineers during Engineers Week with a Get To Know The Team series! Today we feature Johanna, our Senior Mechanical Engineer. What is your favorite part about working with Oshkosh S-Series Front Discharge Concrete Mixers? Johanna: "What I enjoy most is collaborating with our customers, sales team, and production teams to create a fantastic product. We continue to pave the path for innovation, and each of these groups we work with helps us to design and build an incredible truck." What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned working for Oshkosh S-Series? Johanna: "That it is concrete not cement!" If you weren’t an engineer, what do you think you would be doing? Johanna: "I’d probably be a history teacher because I love learning about the past and how it shapes our future." If you had 1 billion dollars, what would you do (and why)? Johanna: "I would donate most of it to food insecurity nonprofits, and land conservation organizations, because everyone should have the food they need and have places to spend time outdoors in nature. With the little leftover, I’d take a trip to Italy & Greece, because I love history and would love to see the ancient ruins!" What is your favorite movie?
