❤️ This week is #carersweek which is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. 💞 It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support. 🗺 This year the theme is 'Putting Carers on the Map' highlighting the invaluable contributions of carers across the UK and ensuring their voices are heard loud and clear. 🚸 Children as young as five can often find themselves in a role as young carer to a family member sometimes carrying out 50 hours of care each week on top of their normal school life. 🏫 Schools, colleges and universities can identify children, young people and adults with caring responsibilities. They can recognise the impact caring can have on their studies, as well as their personal lives. They can take action to ensure carers get the help they need to cope with what can be an intense additional pressure. 📈 Last week, we learnt that, for the second year in a row, schools in BCP were the most effective at identifying young carers across the UK 🏆 MYTIME Young Carers' Level Up Programme once again proving a vital resource and support to schools. 🧐 But there's still work to do as 72% of schools nationally say that they don't know of young carers! 📺 If you can spare a couple of minutes to watch Oritsé Williams talk of his experiences around being a young carer it really will be one of the most worthwhile break you have today.
Fantastic young carer awareness! Having someone speak to passionately about his own experiences as a young carer, as Oritsé Williams, is invaluable to raising the awareness that is so needed around young carers and the challenges they face. Well worth 2 minutes out of anyone's day! 🤩 #youngcarers #awareness #GMB

🌟 Turning "Mission Impossible" into Achievable Goals for People with IDD 🌟 💥 Many aspects of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) may seem impossible, much like a challenging topological puzzle (see YouTube video below). However, what appears to be "mission impossible" can be resolved with the support of dedicated direct support workers. 💪 Direct support workers play a crucial role in helping people with IDD navigate and overcome the obstacles they face, turning seemingly impossible tasks into achievable goals. Their support is invaluable in enhancing the quality of life and promoting independence for those with IDD. 🌟 Let’s celebrate the incredible work of direct support workers and assist them through developing support standards. #IDD #DirectSupportProfessionals #DirectSupportWorkers #Inclusion #SupportServices #Empowerment #DisabilitySupport #MissionPossible #QualityOfLife #AMSupportStandards

Journalist I Media Consultant & Trainer: Gender Equality, Disability & Inclusion; Solutions Journalism I Creator, Reframing Disability I ResearcherI Fellow, Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism '22| TEDx Speaker
Hello! Did you read the most recent issue of Reframing Disability where I reviewed the documentary “Friday Night Blind”? Read and subscribe here if you haven’t already: https://lnkd.in/dbEyJhiy The storytelling is brilliant. But while the documentary is available with captions and a transcript, I couldn’t find a version with audio descriptions even on New Yorker’s website. Without audio descriptions, the documentary is inaccessible to blind and low-vision audiences. When I shared it with my friend, Mahretta Maha, who is a blind filmmaker and disability rights activist in Jakarta, Indonesia, she had to get help from her sighted friend to understand several parts. Mahretta liked the narrative: “What I like is that the documentary spreads the message that blind people can do many things. They can do bowling. They can also have fun. Such perspectives are missing in mainstream Indonesian media.” “But because audio descriptions were missing, I had to rely on my sighted friend to understand various things, such as, who was speaking, how they looked, or how their assistive devices worked,” she added. Here’s the YouTube link: https://lnkd.in/ddCjFsJr What are your thoughts on good storytelling through the lens of disability? #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityRights #InclusiveStorytelling #InclusiveJournalism #SocialJustice

** Learning Disability Week, "Do you see me?" ** We believe every person should be truly seen for who they are. Yet too often, society overlooks people with learning disabilities. We were pretty shocked and upset to learn some of the stats below from research by Mencap: - Only 26.7% of adults with a learning disability are employed, despite 86% wanting a paid job - 1 in 3 spend less than 1 hour outside their home on a typical Saturday - Over 2,000 are currently confined in mental health hospitals These statistics paint a picture of isolation and exclusion. But we believe it doesn't have to be this way. When given the right opportunities and support, people with learning disabilities have so much to contribute to their communities and workplaces. They bring diverse perspectives, resilience, dedication, and enthusiasm that enriches us all. At Cavalry, we're committed to changing care for the better. To us, this means enabling the people we support to live full, purposeful lives as valued members of society. It means focusing on each individual's strengths and championing their right to inclusion. Mencap have some great information on how to get involved in supporting Learning Disability Week and we love their Mencap Myth Buster video, which shares Michael’s story, a business owner and GB representative at the Special Olympics – click below to watch: https://lnkd.in/ei2QdG6y So, this week and beyond, we urge you to truly see people with learning disabilities. See their potential. Fight alongside them for equal opportunities. Become part of the solution. You can check out more info and resources at https://lnkd.in/eMyYFYzd Together, we can build a society where everyone is visible - and valued. #LearningDisabilityWeek #Inclusion #ChangingCareForTheBetter

This individual embodies what I truly stand for. In a world that often imposes limitations on those with disabilities, their journey stands as a testament to the power of resilience and the unwavering belief in oneself. If you are living with a disability, don't let societal expectations dictate your path. Instead, listen to the beat of your own heart, for it holds the melody of your unique potential. It's all too easy to succumb to the pressures of society, which may underestimate your abilities or place obstacles in your way. But remember, greatness often emerges from the challenges we face. So, defy the odds, break free from the constraints, and pursue your dreams with unwavering determination. Be a living testament to the idea that disabilities do not define us but rather add unique colors to the canvas of our lives. Your journey is an inspiration to us all, a reminder that when we follow our hearts and refuse to be confined by external judgments, we become the architects of our own destiny. So, my friends, if you're facing challenges or living with a disability, I encourage you to rise above the noise, focus on your passions, and be unapologetically yourself. Embrace your journey with open arms, for it has the potential to be a beacon of hope and empowerment for others. Let us all champion a world where abilities are celebrated, where obstacles are merely stepping stones, and where the indomitable spirit within each of us shines brightly. Together, we can build a more inclusive, compassionate, and understanding society. Go out and be the something that your heart envisions, for the world is waiting to be inspired by your unique brilliance. https://lnkd.in/gB4iYRJc #Disabilities #Inclusion #Accessibility #DisabilityAwareness #Empowerment #DisabilityRights #Equality #AccessibleWorld #InclusiveSociety #AbilityNotDisability #DiversityandInclusion #SupportInclusion #AccessibleLife #DisabilityAdvocate #InclusionMatters #DisabilityCommunity #Vacation #ExploreTheWorld #AdventureAwaits #TravelInspiration #TravelAddict
