As the month of July comes to a close, it is important that I take this last opportunity to amplify the month of July as Disability Pride Month. Disability Pride Month, is a month-long celebration of people with disabilities, and their contributions to society. This month originated in the United States in 1990 to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law on July 26, 1990. As a person who has lived with a disability (unilateral hearing loss) since I was a small child, I have immense gratitude for the creation of the ADA. People living with a disability have to navigate day to day complexities that are often overlooked and misunderstood by co-workers, friends, and family. The signing of the ADA into law created protection for people living with disabilities to request necessary accommodations to assist in navigating a complex world that is not built for them. The ADA has strengthened the quality of life of for people living with disabilities and fostered inclusion for current and future generations...it is now easier to thrive while living with a disability! #disabilitypride #disabilitypridemonth

This year marks the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark law that ensures equal opportunities and rights for people with disabilities. While this is not recognized as a national holiday, July marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) legislation that opened the door to a more inclusive society. For some, Disability Pride Month is recognizing your disability and loving who you are for it; others celebrate the wins in learning to navigate their disability; or some show their support by just listening and elevating disabled voices.
