Among the most interesting architectural techniques in history, handed down to the present day, is the exploitation of passive cooling through wind towers, which originated in ancient Persia, present-day Iran, where the summer heat reached extremely significant levels. Basically, through wind towers it was possible to cool a building naturally, without having to use any fossil energy. How does a wind tower work? A wind tower, subdivided into vertical sections, favours a continuous convective heat exchange, exploiting the difference in temperature and consequently in pressure between inside and outside; it usually consists of two ducts connected to two different openings at the top, one downwind and one upwind, so as to considerably accelerate the exchange of air, as part of the fresh air descending, sucked in at the base by the downwind duct, attracts the hot air inside, emphasising the chimney effect. Let us analyse the behaviour of a tower in different thermal cycles: - during a windless night, it acts in a similar way to a chimney, in that the heat accumulated by its walls during the day, due to a higher temperature than the night air, is released inside it, heating the latter and generating an upward current (due to the lower density of the hot air) that also sucks in the air inside the building, which is consequently replaced by cooler air; - in the case of night ventilation, on the other hand, the cycle is reversed and the cooler outside air, although slightly heated by the heat of the walls, descends along the tower, cooling the rooms; - finally, on a windless day, in a first phase, using the tower walls cooled during the night, the hot air from outside decreases its temperature circulating inside the building; when the walls begin to heat up, however, the process is reversed and the tower begins to function like a chimney (in the presence of wind, the speed of the flow is amplified). A modern interpretation of wind towers is offered by solar chimneys, to be placed close to the walls exposed to the sun, usually with a glazing at the top and on the heated side as well as covering the opposite inner surface with an absorbent material. In this way, the heating of the air inside the 'greenhouse' amplifies the convective process and the consequent flow of air, drawing heat from the floors below and thus guaranteeing efficient cooling. It is also necessary to provide air intakes, for the escape of heat, in the opposite direction to that of the prevailing wind (downwind side). This cooling system, in the presence of a less torrid climate such as ours, is of considerable interest especially during the summer season, in which exploiting natural convection avoids the use of air conditioners and considerably reduces electricity consumption.
