Clinical trials for treatments to prevent recurring strokes typically only include participants who have little to no disability from a prior stroke. A new Yale study finds that leaving patients with such disability out of trials may limit what can be concluded from their results. Patients with stroke-induced disability — which might include being unable to walk or needing help with day-to-day activities — account for more than half of the stroke survivor population. Including them in trials would yield study cohorts that better reflect — and treatments that better support — the real-world population, researchers say. https://lnkd.in/eUY4MsgA

I am very passionate about #stroke research and the translation into practice, specifically on how future strokes can be prevented, given the high mortality, disability, and cost associated with recurrent stroke. What happens during a stroke? According to the National Stroke Association, stroke is a leading cause of death, killing nearly 130,000 people each year, and is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted by a blood clot or damaged blood vessel. The lack of blood flow kills brain cells quickly. Damaged or dead brain cells do not regenerate. For the best outcome, quality stroke care must be delivered quickly to save as many brain cells as possible. Blessing Hospital is a nationally recognized Primary Stroke Center, affirming the hospital’s readiness and ability to provide the highest quality stroke-related healthcare, which includes diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education. During 2023, more than 370 people came to Blessing Hospital for stroke-related care, nearly 230 community residents took advantage of stroke-related health screenings and 970 people received stroke education through printed materials and in-person presentations. Each year, over five million people suffer severe TBIs, making recovery prediction challenging. Families often decide on life-sustaining treatment within 72 hours, relying on clinicians' subjective prognoses. This decision varies widely and affects research outcomes. A study in the Journal of Neurotrauma using TRACK-TBI data found notable survival and partial independence rates at six months, highlighting the need for better prognostic tools and decision-making in TBI care. #TraumaticBrainInjury #PatientAdvocacy #CriticalCare

Four RWJBarnabas Health facilities have achieved the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke GoldPlus quality achievement award for their commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability. We congratulate Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Jersey City Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset! Stroke is the 5th cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. It occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability, and accelerating recovery times. May is Stroke Awareness Month and it's a critical time to talk about the impact of telemedicine on stroke care. Every year, strokes affect millions of individuals, often leading to serious long-term disabilities. With the advent of telemedicine, we're witnessing a paradigm shift in how stroke care is delivered. Telemedicine offers rapid response times and access to specialized care that can make all the difference in recovery. Patients can receive immediate attention from stroke specialists, no matter where they are. This is crucial because, when it comes to strokes, time is brain. Our Acute Neurology services provide: - Immediate assessments by stroke specialists - Guidance on critical interventions like thrombolytic therapy - Expert care for non-stroke neurological conditions We're not just improving outcomes; we're making stroke care more equitable. Rural and underserved communities now have access to the same level of expertise found in leading stroke centers around the country. This Stroke Awareness Month, let's spread the word about the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms early and the powerful role telemedicine plays in treatment. Share this message, and let's work together to reduce the impact of strokes on our communities. Join us in the conversation using the hashtags #StrokeAwarenessMonth and #TelemedicineSavesLives. Together, we can create a future where distance is no longer a barrier to life-saving stroke care. Learn how we are changing the way stroke care is delivered: https://lnkd.in/eaM5VDc #StrokeAwarenessmonth #Telehealth #HealthcareInnovation #DigitalHealthcare #TelemedicineSavesLives

A preliminary study presented last week at the American Stroke Association’s 2024 International Stroke Conference found that Stroke survivors living in areas with poor economic conditions were twice as likely to have a poor recovery compared to survivors living in areas with better conditions. These findings underscore the significance of social determinants of health, with poor functional outcomes tied significantly to intermediate and high deprivation areas. “We hope this study will help promote awareness of how social determinants of health are as important as clinical variables and health information when trying to identify patients who are particularly high risk for poor long-term outcomes". #StrokeRecovery #HealthEquity #SocialDeterminants
