Educating and Helping People to Better Understand Biases, Their Impact, and How to Try and Keep Them in Check
Claim is the key word. This legislation can and will be used to censor information and access to information. I know because I’m used to the “controversial” information I convey being censored. “Online safety legislation is opposed by many it claims to protect…. More than 100 human rights and LGBTQ groups have condemned the bill, saying it would endanger minors, especially LGBTQ youth. First Amendment lawyers and organizations focused on protecting free speech also have lambasted the proposal and similar state laws, saying they would place dire restrictions on free speech and expression…. An open letter written in 2022 by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit digital rights group, has been signed by dozens of LGBTQ and human rights organizations. It outlined an extensive list of issues with the bill, saying it would require social media sites “to employ broad content filtering to limit minors’ access to certain online content” and would “threaten the privacy, safety, and access to information rights of young people and adults alike.”… “People have been using the idea of protecting children as the justification for authoritarian policies that actually hurt children for decades,” said Evan Greer, director of Fight for the Future, another human rights advocacy group. “KOSA is not a privacy bill; it’s a censorship bill.” Greer listed the concerns: “KOSA, as written, would make kids less safe by cutting them off from access to lifesaving information and resources on controversial but important topics like abortion, gender-affirming care, substance abuse and even current events.”… “It can and will be used as a censorship bill,” Greer said…. A 2022 Pew Research survey found that the majority of teens credit social media with “strengthening their friendships and providing support.” LGBTQ youths specifically have more positive outcomes when they have access to social media, according to a 2023 report by the U.S. surgeon general…. A 2023 Oxford study that analyzed data from close to a million people across 72 countries over the course of 12 years… found a potential association between Facebook use and positive well-being…. Research shows that how social media makes people feel depends largely on how they use it. In a 2023 advisory, the American Psychology Association said that “using social media is not inherently beneficial or harmful to young people. Adolescents’ lives online both reflect and impact their offline lives.”… Taylor Barkley, director of technology and innovation policy at the Center for Growth and Opportunity, a policy research center at Utah State University [said], “it [is] the more important to find solutions that work, and a lot of major leading proposals are not going to end up helping kids and teens in the long run. It’s going to end up restricting their access to information, educational content, connection, community.” https://lnkd.in/gftrMHVs

🚨 Utah set up an online form for people to accuse other citizens and public establishments of violating the state’s recently-enacted transphobic “bathroom bill.” Predictably, the submission form is being flooded with memes and troll comments. ❗ But the auditor left the submissions database open to the public—without a password, authentication, or any other protections that would keep anyone from viewing other people’s submissions. ✍️ After 404 Media contacted the auditor's office for comment, they changed the permissions to require authentication. 📃 In January, Utah enacted House Bill 257, "Sex-Based Designations for Privacy, Anti-Bullying, and Women’s Opportunities,” requiring the State Auditor to receive and investigate alleged violations of the law. According to the ACLU’s analysis of this code, it “bars transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people from accessing privacy spaces and other facilities in public schools and government owned or controlled spaces.” Families are struggling to understand how the law will be enforced, while the state bungles the security of reporting measures like this form. Time is running out to address urgent threats to human rights in the current text of the UN's proposed Cybercrime Convention. In a joint statement with 100+ other groups, including CyberPeace Institute, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Human Rights Watch and ARTICLE 19, we set out the key problems with the Convention, as well as concrete ways to fix them: https://lnkd.in/d6FQrZyV
The fight against cybercrime must not come at the expense of human rights, gender equality, and the dignity of the people whose lives will be affected by the emerging #UN Treaty. The CyberPeace Institute has joined more than a hundred NGOs in a statement delivered to the Ad Hoc Committee that outlines civil society's non-negotiable redlines for the Cybercrime Convention. https://lnkd.in/epbdd8v4

Connecting the dots between clearance policy + reality | serial community builder | writer | bibliophile
One of the favorite parts about working in a creative profession is the chance to take personal experiences and turn them into opportunities to learn, amplify issues that affect others, and grow awareness in our community. I came across Nina Jankowicz's book 'How to Be a Woman Online' and found it to be the perfect, pithy, and wise guide to being a woman online in divisive times. As we gear up for another election cycle, the ‘deep state divide’ remains an issue, and disinformation continues to threaten the spread of accurate information about issues at home and abroad. For women in national security, in particular, there are increased risks for simply working in this space, let alone giving voice to topics and issues that matter. Buy me a drink, and I'll give you all of my controversial opinions, trust me - they probably won't be what you expect. But simply having a platform for information shouldn't cause you to be harassed. Check out this worthwhile conversation, and help protect the women and underserved voices in your network. https://lnkd.in/gzrN_Hus
