I applaud the design aesthetic. FLIR makes the little Hornets that are cool, maybe they could make Hornet sized LMs for headshot-like targeting. To content the analogy, regarding LMs in general I can’t help thinking that I’d prefer a Wasp to a Bee design, where the device ejects something grenade-like and can auto-return to sender to re-up and go again. FLIR and AVINC are the key leaders for the heavily weighted DIU Replicator program. A few years ago when the LM capacity was first seen we were like: “Wow, fast track that!” Now there is a consensus regarding price point and logistics issues, because the UA battle-lab necessity has shown that the ‘poor-man’s’ LM; MacGyver toy drone (remember Flir’s hornet started life as a toy in Norway)+grenade+duct-tape can be effective for under $10,000 (at the high end even). Thus shows how quick the disruptor can become the disrupted, and that chasing the emerging-tech wave will always lead to a sense of dissatisfaction with what we have compared to what we could have. Same challenge from drones to datacenters. Still, regarding Replicator attritable-ness and a low-end hedge that conforms to economic and logistical real-politik would be welcomed by many.
