Direct Air Capture innovations are surging, pilots are growing, and cost projections are dropping more quickly than many folks anticipated. These technologies are critical for climate change mitigation (as the International Energy Agency (IEA) has said on multiple occasions across multiple reports). We don't reach climate goals without some mechanisms for removing the greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. Direct Air Capture is critical. In fact, carbon capture is critical in general. The bottom line is, until we have come a long way from an infrastructure standpoint, hydrocarbons will remain the cornerstone of the US energy economy. This isn't an energy war, it's an energy transition. No energy is 'bad'. While the scale of a deployment of carbon capture that righted the loss of rainforests alone from a carbon absorption standpoint is around 7.6 billion tons of carbon (which would be at $70 - $100 a ton to capture), or a minimum of ~$536 billion invested in current tech, new tech can reduce that amount radically - and can heavily mitigate the time needed to actually transition on an achievable timescale. It's not letting us off the hook for using hydrocarbons. It's recognizing that we will continue to do so for at least the next generation or two, and the need to mitigate that. Seeing this activity is heartening, because ultimately if someone comes up with a way to cheaply and reliably sequester carbon - then there would be no such thing as 'bad' energy in any discourse, and we wouldn't have to turn our back so fully on an energy source as abundant as hydrocarbons to still have a positive environmental impact. It's kind of like conversations about going to space - no matter how badly we wound the Earth, it'll always be more hospitable to us than Venus, and an easier path would be remediating the earth than terraforming Mars, in the short term. Similarly, no matter how rapidly or effectively we transition to renewables, it'll always be an order of magnitude more difficult than at least attempting to clean up existing sources of energy in the short term. So let's do both. #carboncapture #energytransition
