One not-talked-about-enough aspect of anime is its obsession with incremental improvement. Like the Japanese car industry, the majority of what gets produced is only a slight variation on formats, themes, and successes of the past. In 2023, nearly 60 new series were produced and at least 25 features according to my own casual count - many of which are finales or summaries of existing TV series. We can glorify the highlights. But in that list, there's also a lot of well... average stuff. So, with cautious underwhelm, here's the trailer for Studio Ponoc's Imaginary. What saddens me here is that we've literally seen every scene shown here before. Even though it's based on a 2014 British children's novel, all I see here are pale imitations of: Spirited Away Ponyo Boy & The Heron Castle in the Sky The Cat Returns Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends The recent Ryan Reynold's movie 'If' The Never-Ending Story And although the animation looks wonderful, as Studio Ponoc is made-up of ex-Ghibli staff. The character design feels particularly un-inspired. Feels like they're just doing exactly what they've done before, but for a different script. So the result is 'Kirkland Brand' Ghibli (for my Costco folks out there!). Anyway, I don't typically like to trash animation. And I'll probably skim through this to see what it's like. But, I don't know... I just don't feel the need to watch a compliation of what I've already seen.
