Are we exploiting students in the name of unpaid internships? Student architects in India are promised exposure to real-world projects and the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals under the pretense of an unpaid internship. They add great value to a project, yet they are denied fair compensation. The reality of the tasks interns are assigned overshadows the promise of learning and exposure that unpaid internships offer. Many interns find themselves relegated to menial, repetitive tasks that fail to provide the enriching experiences they signed up for. Moreover, many interns are finding themselves overworked and undervalued, stretching their limits without adequate rewards. Isn't that exploitation? Even though architecture has come a long way, the education system and laws in the country are highly primitive. After getting through their expensive architectural education, many students are struggling financially by interning far from their hometown just to work with well-known architects. As architects who design homes that understand the needs of humanity, we need to understand the struggles of interns. I am not saying that interns should be paid the same as junior architects. Absolutely aligned with the point Alhad Sir. 💯 Unfair practice of not paying interns by some architects and firms sets a wrong benchmark in the service industry. This practice encourages prospects and clients to negotiate on fees, assuming architects can get work done from interns for free. It has also come to light that some renowned retailers and companies refuse to pay advances or POs to consultants and vendors, expecting support until project completion and only paying after several follow-ups. This is like exploiting service providers under the guise of "project opportunities and more projects" Architects and interior designers taking opportunities without payments is unethical and should be avoided. Similarly, any user enjoying services without making necessary payments is unacceptable, unethical, and should not be entertained. Fair practice would help create a better working environment in the industry for future architects. Architecture (Media) in India has been going through a massive wave of talking around "Unpaid Internships" recently. All credits to an article through ArchitectureLive!, the topic got a refresh. While I was combing through the articles related to this, on the portal, I came to notice that this topic has been written and published there since 2017! It has certainly not been in the books RECENTLY. It is a long cold battle between skewed minimum wage rules for Architects/Interns in India and the Employers. The topic got amplified in the past weeks due to a truthful interview with an Indian Architect. Fortunately, I was not on the brutal end for my 6-month-long Internship at Shilanyas Design Consultants in 2014. Got a fair stipend which enabled me to sustain myself in the city of Ahmedabad, India. Elevate your architectural internship by drawing on-site! Being "on-site" is not limited to project sites, so... Anytime you're outside - You're on-site. Not all #internships may include project site visits within the first few months but don't let that hold you back, visit your nearest built/on-going buildings and start sketching what you see! These are sketches from a precedent site visit, done yesterday during lunch, with colleagues. ↳ on paper: drawn on-site but cut short because we had to leave. ↳ on tissue: drawn from memory just before eating (channeling the creatives who draw on serviettes when out with other creatives) - it's a real thing. 😂 There are many sketches, but I'm sharing these ones because they show how spontaneous and loose sketches can/should be. We sat down with our Intern, Gene Mongan, to get his take on what he’s been up to during his internship with our Northstar team. Gene’s biggest takeaway is, “The most rewarding thing for me while working with the Northstar team was having exposure to a wide range of projects throughout various stages of the design and construction processes. Everyone I spoke to at Northstar was very knowledgeable on these subjects and possessed backgrounds from various professions such as architecture, engineering, and business administration that further facilitated my learning.” Regarding the skills he acquired, “I was much more involved with the hands-on, on-site tasks and responsibilities compared to previous co-ops. I also greatly enjoyed the variety of tasks and challenges that I was given, such as developing site reports, performing inventory counts, and managing coordination between the owner, architect, and contractor.
