Winners are grinners! 😁 The City of Cockburn and SpacetoCo took out the ‘Best Use of Technology’ award at the Parks and Leisure Australia (WA) Awards for Excellence 2024. The win celebrates the innovative approach to improving the utilisation of community recreation facilities, while significantly reducing administration times for the City and its customers. The cutting-edge technology streamlines the booking process for community and sporting facilities, making it easier and faster for residents to find and book local venues. The City has seen a remarkable 25% increase in facility bookings and 62% reduction in customer service calls to the City’s recreation team since implementing this technology. Mayor Logan Howlett acknowledged the win was not just about the award, or even the partnership, but about the efficiencies gained through automated processes and increased facility usage. "Finding efficiencies through the use of technology is an ongoing focus for the City," Mayor Howlett said. “The success of this initiative not only demonstrates the power of technology in enhancing community engagement, but also sets a benchmark for other local governments to follow." L-R: Jeremy Hurst from SpacetoCo, and Kylie Santich and Nathan Johnston from City of Cockburn.

Extremely grateful to be allowed the chance to attend the Reconciliation and Recreation: Advice and Lessons from Outdoor Groups webinar presented by Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia and sponsored by Real Estate Foundation of BC Designed for recreational organizations eager to engage in reconciliation efforts but uncertain about how to begin, a panel comprising leaders from the outdoor recreation community recounted instances of projects that successfully leveraged a mutual love for nature to positively impact local First Nations communities. They discussed effective strategies, setbacks encountered, and key takeaways and provided guidance on initiating and advancing these efforts. As a marketer who often works with tourism businesses that want to be involved in making B.C.’s outdoor spaces more equitable and sustainable, I can not recommend the webinar more for anyone who is part of this space. Because I love seeing people takeaways from things, here is mine in the form of a term I can equip my vocabulary with: Redress. While reconciliation emphasizes understanding, redress by definition, is: "the act or an instance of setting right a wrong; remedy or cure: to seek redress of grievances. restitution, compensation, amends, or reparation for a wrong. SE Group’s Claire Humber and Gabrielle Voeller, AICP presented at the Urban Land Institute’s Recreation Development Council (RDC) meeting in November 2023 alongside Darla Callaway from Design Workshop and Mark Baker from Wood + Partners. The panel discussed the ever-increasingly complex intersection of resort development and community planning. "What does community planning have to do with resort development? Increasingly, the answer to that question is everything. Our goal today is to share some emerging tools and trends within this increasingly complex, "interconnectedness of all things" world of resort community planning and some case studies that have harnessed new ways of thinking toward positive outcomes - a public/private "win-win.” - Claire Humber SE Group has over 60 years of experience working with ski resorts, communities, and developers at hundreds of ski areas around the world. We understand the complexities of resort planning and development, alongside the opportunities and impacts it creates for local communities.
