In times when extremist movements are gaining popularity, it is even more important to emphasize our values. Racist, xenophobic and discriminatory beliefs have no place at ELA. I‘ve been invited to hold a lecture on populism today in St Johann im Pongau, Salzburg, in the framework of women‘s rights week. So, I chose to prepare a lecture on gender equality agendas and female figures in radical-right populist parties. It hasn‘t been exactly easy to prepare this lecture since I would rather celebrate then criticise women. But being a woman doesn‘t automatically make you a champion of diversity or an ally of women struggling to become economically independent or reconcile career and family life; especially if we zoom into their family policies that aim to increase the birthrate but discourage women’s participation in the labor market, and then statements against the right to abortion, or same-sex partnerships. Everything related to diversity is often portrayed as the ‚enemy of the family.‘ Being a prominent woman in a radical-right populist party does have some pleasant effects as a party strategy, though, in that a woman often functions to soften the macho-image and other unsympathic aspects of these parties. Happy to be contributing to a critical view of radical-right populism, the role of women in such men-dominated parties, and the problematic aspects of their gender-related agendas.

The rain doesn’t stop us!! 😎 Standing up for true and deliberate inclusion and diversity is more important than ever. In ancient Greece and Rome, same-sex relationships were acknowledged, tolerated, and even celebrated in literature and art. Traditional Native American cultures embrace the concept of “Two-spirit” to describe individuals who fulfill the traditional third-gender (or other gender-variant) roles in their communities. Yet, in 2023, 685 attacks related to trans or homosexual people were registered just in Berlin alone, an increase of 23% compared to 2022. What we are demonstrating and standing up for today is not new. Is diversity a good thing? 🤔 A heartfelt thanks to Kitimbwa Sabuni and Brandon Sekitto for helping us tackle some huge questions at last Wednesday’s Let’s Talk About Race panel. The conversation began with a look at current events before moving into a chat about whether diversity is actually valuable. The panel had some differing takes on the business case vs. moral case for diversity, and Brandon highlighted the unique responsibility of those in the public sector: “I can see that private companies maybe don't see the value of diversity. […] But if you work in a public space and you're in a position of power and you don't understand the value of diversity, you're in the wrong place. You should remove yourself. You should move on." Kitimbwa also made a great point about how some organizations define the concept of diversity so broadly that it loses any connection to discrimination and justice. After touching on why some people deny the impact of race on their lives, the conversation closed with personal reflections on whether it’s good to be a person of color living in a majority-white region like the Nordics. 🌟 International Women’s Day is a time for reflection, celebration, and action. As we honor the achievements of women worldwide, let's remember to embrace our uniqueness, speak up for ourselves, and champion our own careers. But not at all costs. In the pursuit of success, it's crucial to curate a supportive network, navigate work-life integration, and cherish our roles as busy moms, partners, caregivers, colleagues, daughters… But not at all costs. Reflecting on Greta Gerwig's powerful words from the #Barbie monologue in the video below, we're reminded of the societal pressures to conform, to never falter, to always strive for perfection. But let's acknowledge the rigidity of the system while remaining grateful for our journey. But not at all costs. We're often told to never show weakness, to always excel, to never step out of line. But let's challenge this narrative. Let's reject burnout culture and prioritize our well-being, our love for life, and our families. But not at all costs. So as we commemorate International Women’s Day, let's work hard for the roles we deserve, but let's not lose sight of what truly matters. Let's redefine success on our terms, without sacrificing our joy, our passions, or our relationships. March 1st to March 8th has become Women's Week in Norway. Many events celebrate the rights women have obtained in this country during history. Despite the reputation of having a high degree of gender equality, there is still a need for a law from the government that says that women are to be represented on the leading boards of big companies in Norway. Because even if they work side by side with men, and run households, companies and sometimes even the country themselves, it seems that women are still not "fit" to rule in some people's eyes. Therefore, the government needed to take action. In response to that, "Tradition" strikes back in the Sunday magazine of the most significant business newspaper in the country, "Dagens næringsliv," which has an interesting front page this weekend. It shows a woman with a baby on her lap, and with the title: "Women who are planning children should think carefully before they say YES to be a member of a leading board". As an observer of the society I live in and trying to understand it for the past 20 years, I notice that gender equality is not so equal as it claimes to be, more times than we would like it. If it was, it wouldn't have needed a law to demand women's representation in the leading boards. The good thing is that the same society has developed an "adjustment" policy, where I believe that women with small children who need to be fed will still be welcome in the boards meeting rooms. That time in their lives does not last forever anyway... Still, I guess Peter Drukker was right, and "Tradition" will still be "eating rules/laws on bread" in more circles than we would like. International Women’s Day is a day for men. Yep, you read it right. Honestly, on this #IWD, I really just wanted to take a break. International Women’s Day is a day for men to think about what they can do to make the world a better place for women. Women? Well, we spend all 365 days trying to occupy our place at the table, trying to prove our ideas matter, trying to juggle all the tasks that come with being a woman. Should I take that business trip or be present for an important appointment with my child? Should I register for that career-advancing course or simply not add another task so I can finally breathe in the chaos? Have you noticed? It’s usually an "or" choice. We are never enough, although we are expected to be. Or, even worse, we are not, and we will always be seen with that condescending look that implies: “Aw, look at her. Trying to be what she’ll never be. So cute.” A while ago, the evening was warm, and the sky was full of stars. Breathing in that warm air in the middle of winter made my soul melt. I was at a restaurant, and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to walk back to my hotel – a 40-minute walk, soaking in all that warmth and energy. Did I do it? No, I did not. I was afraid, as it was past 9 pm, and I would need to cross a park. The perks of being a woman. International Women’s Day is for men. I already know the countless battles I’ve fought. I know the sacrifices of women before me. I fight every single day to do my best just so I can make $0.88 for every $1 a man makes in Ontario. (Yep!) “Use Botox, this wrinkle between your eyes makes you look angry” – I heard once. “Are you his wife?” – asked someone at a dinner about a man who happened to be my boss (!), as if it was the reasonable explanation for my presence. “Little girl” – that one actually made me really proud of myself. It’s not every day that the mayor tries to diminish you during an interview by calling you "little girl." I must have made him really pissed. For every man that reads this and thinks “Geez, look how much they complain”, I bet there are 10 other women who would benefit from that man actually thinking about this day. World Braille Day on January 4 is celebrated to honor the birth of Braille’s inventor, Louis Braille. Braille’s gift to the world has brightened the lives of millions of people around the world who are blind or visually impaired, and they benefit from his work every day. The day also acknowledges that those with visual impairments deserve the same standard of human rights as everyone else.  Background Eye conditions are remarkably common. The World Health Organization estimates that globally, at least 1 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, has advanced the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The Convention considers Braille essential for education, freedom of expression and opinion, access to information and social inclusion. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015, further pledges that no one will be left behind in the aim to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives.
