Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. As both a lawyer and the Executive Director of Direito Mental dedicated to mental health in the legal profession, the issue of #suicide in our field hits close to home. Last year, we conducted a study that revealed 15% 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘢𝘸𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘺 - a figure that deeply concerns me and many of my colleagues. The pressures, long hours, and high expectations are unsustainable and often lead to silent struggles. Recent events, such as the tragic passing of Vanessa Ford of Pinsent Masons, bring this issue into stark focus. As the Telegraph reports below, a time management system has since been implemented to track excessive work hours, aiming to prevent burnout and ensure no one faces such unbearable stress alone. While these initiatives are a step forward, we need more than systems—we need a cultural shift. Legal professionals need healthy environments where open conversations about wellbeing are encouraged.
