When communicating with an individual living with dementia, less is more. We tend to over-talk and over-explain, which can complicate and confuse the message, resulting in frustration. Keep the message simple, short, slow, and specific. #projectpresent #communicationguidelines #dementia #dementiacare #keepitsimple

When visiting someone with dementia, it is crucial to be mindful of the challenges that may arise. Here are some tips to help ensure a more successful visit for both you and the person with dementia: 1️⃣ Prepare in advance: Plan a meaningful activity to engage the person during the visit. Suggestions include looking at old photos, enjoying music together, having a snack, or going for a walk or drive. 2️⃣ Time it right: Find out the best time of day for the visit. Avoid scheduling it when other activities are happening, either at the care facility or at home. Generally, late morning or early afternoon works well. 3️⃣ Create a calm environment: Steer clear of crowded places with lots of noise and distractions. These settings can be overwhelming for someone with dementia. Opt for one-on-one walks to take a break from larger group activities. #DementiaCare #MeaningfulVisits #CalmEnvironment #dementia #elderlycare #ottawa #mississauga
