Project-based prefab is still the most successful project delivery method I have seen in North America. AKA Popup Prefab. So far, I've seen 3 large projects do this. The other two were 1.3M (ONSITE prefab) and 1.9M (near-site prefab) square feet. Size and construction type are big factors. But the client / GC team must drive it. Those are biggest factors. #offsiteconstruction #prefabrication #modularconstruction #buildingproducts #masstimber #buildperpectives

Great strategy and planning here in preparation for such an important investment and monumental growth to the Harborview campus!
King County, WA Harborview Bond Program recently led strategic planning efforts with Harborview Medical Center to renovate the hospital’s campus infrastructure, with a spotlight on resiliency, sustainability, and efficiency. Our team supported King County in creating a new Harborview Medical Center Facilities Master Plan to guide campus infrastructure redevelopment. The plan improves energy efficiency and supports mission critical systems, enabling Harborview to optimize their campus and continue outstanding care to our region’s most vulnerable patients. Learn more about the new Facilities Master Plan and how we collaborated with our partners to improve Harborview’s campus. 👉 https://lnkd.in/gZbVgpNE (Partners: McKinstry, Wood Harbinger, Inc., Jamieson Architecture, PCS Structural Solutions, Coughlin Porter Lundeen, DCW Cost Management, Integrated Design Engineers, HVAC Double Check, LLC, LightWire, Bolima Drafting & Design, Inc.) #ProjectManagement #Healthcare #Sustainability #BuiltWithOAC

Another One Bites the Dust! Yet another casualty in the saga of Healthcare design and construction. Despite a clinic ideally suited for effective partial-height construction, including the advantages of a pre-manufactured solution, a project I pursued defaulted to a conventional deck-to-deck design. The reason? “Too late in the process to consider alternatives.” It’s not just a missed opportunity; it’s a costly misstep. The client trusted their design and construction team to deliver the best solution, only to overspend on an inferior solution, leading to increased ownership costs. Spread the message” clinging to outdated, pricier methods isn’t justifiable. Spread the word: it’s time to prioritize smarter building practices, including the inclusion of a construction acoustic specialist. #buildsmarter #acousticconstruction

Last week, the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and Transportation Research Board published our research report on Development of Clear Recovery Area Guidelines. It is one of the my proudest contributions in the roadside safety design field. The book presents guidelines to determine a recommended clear recovery distance for a given set of roadway and roadside characteristics. Given the large number of roadside scenarios considered, we proposed an innovative and user-friendly way to present the risk-based guidelines that correlate recommended clear zone distance with the potential for severe injuries or fatalities to motorists. These guidelines will be considered for inclusion in the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) Roadside Design Guide future editions, when roadside design transitions into risk-based design models. This report should be of interest to road design and safety professionals seeking to specify the safest and most practical clear zone recovery areas for various roadway designs. The average per square foot construction cost to build a new hospital has increased more than 6% in the last year alone, and more than 20% over the past five years. What's driving this increase? Material costs in HVAC and plumbing. It takes several years to plan, design and construct a healthcare facility, making it incredibly difficult to budget for such dramatic cost increases. It's critical to work directly with manufacturing partners as early as possible in the process to reduce exposure to such dramatic budget changes.

Fady Khudair put up Part 2 of this interview where we get into values, goals, leadership, and the personal aspects of what we do at BPA. For those of you who know me, the stories that are told in this one get right to the heart. Hopefully, some moments connect, inspire, or make for a good laugh (pink garage doors from the 70s). Imagine how amazing it feels when you realize the work you have done years ago is coming back in ways you did not even fathom to help one of your family members directly. Join me to watch the second part of my interview on our YouTube channel Kanata on the rocks with my friend Engineer Brian Johnson of structural engineering BPA. Watch to see as we uncover how some of the work they have done around the city of Ottawa comes back to directly help one of his family members. . . . . . . . . #healthcare #engineering #engineer #structuralengineering #heartinstitute #yourottawarealtor https://lnkd.in/eCqz9sBS

The urgency to innovate provided the perfect opportunity to show what hospitals could be. In 1994, California building codes mandated stricter seismic standards for hospitals, which required Loma Linda University Medical Center to renovate. The single structure was upgraded to a dual-tower facility offering care to adults on one side, and children on the other. But what’s more, is that this feat of structural engineering can move six inches vertically and up to 42 inches laterally in the event of an earthquake. The pedestrian bridge connecting the towers is fitted with CS expansion joint systems that allow the structure to shift, so people can safely pass through during seismic events. SRJC Roseland modernization project update: Following the acquisition of the #SRJC Roseland property in 2022, construction began in May 2023. Formerly called the SRJC Southwest Santa Rosa Center, the site is situated on 9.5 acres in the southwest corner of Santa Rosa, near the city’s current limits. According to the SRJC Capital Projects office, Phase 1 of the modernization project is nearing completion, which includes tearing down old irreparable buildings, installation of electric vehicle chargers, paving and striping of new parking lots, paving of the entrance and new walkways, storm drain connection, utility upgrades, and installing new circuits and wire data infrastructure. Phase 2 will include the construction of a new student welcome center. The architectural rendering below shows how the center is projected to look, once completed.
