Exciting Milestone for Baltimore: Rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge
Proud to share a significant update for our beloved city posted yesterday. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) have secured key federal environmental approvals for the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Categorical Exclusion (CE) classification and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) approval for the I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge Rebuild Project marks a crucial step forward. This project, led by the unwavering efforts of MDTA, SHA, and the leadership of Governor Wes Moore, will restore a vital link in our interstate system, with significant positive impacts on our community and economy.
This approval ensures that the replacement bridge, built within the former bridge’s right-of-way, will have the same capacity of four travel lanes without significant impacts on community, natural, or cultural resources.
Key Highlights of the Project:
- No significant impacts on planned growth or land use.
- No relocations of people or businesses.
- Travel patterns will remain consistent with pre-collapse conditions.
- No impact on historic or recreational resources.
The MDTA has also released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a $75 million General Engineering Consultant contract. This step further ensures the seamless execution of the project, incorporating strong community engagement and compliance with Disadvantaged Business Enterprise goals.
As a Baltimore native, I'm incredibly optimistic about the future this rebuild promises for our city. It symbolizes resilience, connectivity, and progress. Stay tuned for more updates and community events related to the bridge's reconstruction.
