REFLECTIONS ON THE 5TH WAIMM STUDENTS CONFERENCE 2024: PART I. I recently had the privilege of attending the 5th WAIMM Students Conference, a fantastic program that offered invaluable learning opportunities and networking experiences. In this post, I'll share my key takeaways from some of the presentations. The conference kicked off with a "Present-a-Ton" session, featuring insightful talks from industry professionals. Here are the highlights: - *The Impact of Generation Alpha on the Workforce* by Prof Bernard Kumi-Boateng Prof. Boateng discussed the characteristics of Generation Alpha and their implications for the workforce. He emphasized the need for understanding and adapting to these changes. - *Politics in Mining* by Richard Dapaah Ofori, MAusIMM Richard's presentation focused on the importance of safety awareness in the mining industry. He defined an engineer as someone who develops technologies to ensure environmental safety and highlighted key points on safety awareness. - *Coefficient of Chronic Unease* by PRINCE DUFE Prince's presentation was particularly impactful, and I took away the following key points: ‣ Chronic unease refers to the experience of discomfort and concern about risk management. ‣ Train yourself to be safety-conscious and look beyond what's visible. ‣ Be aware of your situation and environment. ‣ He emphasized the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): + How you see the world influences what you do. + What you do influences what you get. + What you get influences how you see the world. ‣ Don't assume, and don't compromise on safety. These presentations set the tone for a thought-provoking conference, and I look forward to sharing more insights in Part II. #careerdevelopment #career #safety #industry #professionals #conference #WAIMM

We all know that the integrity of the process that wastewater produced through our domestic lives is treated and eventually discharged into the environment is vital. We sometimes forget however, that many of the industries that Ireland is renowned for, produce significant amounts of #wastewater through their processes and operations. These industries include #Pharmaceuticals, #Agrifood (dairy, meat, beverages, processed foods etc.), #Chemical and #Construction. In collaboration with Uisce Éireann Irish Water Eireann and the Local Authority Services National Training Group, Atlantic Technological University have developed a part time online Level 6 Certificate in Wastewater Treatment Operations. This programme is ideal for those who may be working in the above industries, in roles associated with water treatment, but do not hold any formal qualifications in the area. The programme will develop the requisite skills and competencies to allow graduates fully engage with the technological changes that are a constant in the sector. Entry requirements are a Level 5 (Leaving Cert or equivalent). The programme also provides a route to more advanced water and environmental programmes from Level 7 to Level 9 at ATU. 🌟 EXOES: Progress Update on the Battena Project! 🌟 Nearly four months after signing the convention, we would like to provide an update on our progress with the Battena project, “BATTErie Training in Nouvelle-Aquitaine,” and our ongoing efforts to foster expertise in the battery industry. What have we achieved so far in 2024? ⌛ ❎ Awareness Campaign: This year, we've made significant strides in raising awareness about battery-related careers. Our presence at various engineering school forums has allowed us to engage with many students, discussing the exciting and critical opportunities available in the battery industry. ❎ Securing Funding: We have just received our grant to develop educational content for the upcoming year. This funding will play a crucial role in crafting comprehensive training materials and resources. ❎ Partnerships & Opportunities: We have identified key partners, including educational institutions, to collaborate on implementing courses and practical work. Our goal is to provide students with hands-on experience, integrate battery technology into various academic programs, and to ultimately add a “battery specialization” to diplomas. Looking ahead: ⏩ 2025: We will roll out training programs and workshops in schools, delivering both lectures and interactive sessions to deepen students' understanding of the battery industry. ⏩ 2026: The launch of the EXOES Academy will mark a significant milestone, offering our internal training program to further enhance the skills and knowledge of our team and industry professionals. We are committed to driving the future of battery technology and are proud to be part of the Battena initiative. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to make strides in transforming the battery landscape! Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine #EXOES #Battena #BatteryTraining #Electromobility

"To you, dear prospective student, I offer this advice: Dare to dream, chase your passions relentlessly and never underestimate the power of resilience." Those words of wisdom are from Aigerim Akiltayeva, a graduate of the MEL in Clean Energy Engineering and one of this year's rising stars. When Aigerim Akiltayeva was faced with the challenge of being a full-time student, a teaching assistant, and a mother, she found herself struggling to find time. "Balancing studies, my role as a sustainability scholar, being a TA towards the end of the year, and participating in the CDL course, all within the span of one year, proved to be quite demanding." It's often the case that we grow the most when we're challenged, which was certainly Aigerims experience. "It was a period where I truly learned what it means to step out of my comfort zone, away from my home country, juggling different roles as a student and as a mom, all while forming long-lasting friendships." Follow the link in the comments to read more about Aigerim's journey through the MEL. Share your congratulations in the comments below! #UBCMEL #MasterOfEngineeringLeadership #programspotlight #programinnovation #renewableenergy #cleanenergy #netzero #engineeringleadership #climatechange #vancouver
