WorkSafe has commenced a public tender process to appoint a suitably qualified provider to deliver a key Return to Work Victoria pilot. The Worker Mental Health Support Helpline will provide small and medium sized Victorian businesses with counselling services similar to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Workers will be able to access support to help improve their mental wellbeing and address issues of work related stress and burnout before they potentially lead to an injury that might need medical treatment or time off work. Request for tenders are now open and will close at 2pm on Tuesday 8 October. Changes to Victoria’s WorkCover scheme came into effect from 31 March. These include new eligibility requirements for mental health claims. · A new definition of mental injury, to be an injury causing significant behavioural, cognitive or psychological dysfunction, and that has been diagnosed by a medical practitioner (GP/Psychiatrist) in accordance with the latest version of the DSM · For primary mental injury claims, the requirement that employment must be the strongest or largest contributing cause of a worker's mental injury for it to be eligible for compensation · A new exclusion for workers to no longer be eligible for compensation where a primary mental injury has been mainly caused by stress or burnout, from events that are considered usual or typical and are reasonably expected to occur in the course of their duties. Despite the new exclusion, workers may remain eligible for compensation in situations including: · Situations of repeated and unreasonable interpersonal conflict, considered to be bullying and harassment · Where injury has predominantly arisen from stress or burnout in work that is usually or typically traumatic (e.g. frontline workers) · Mental injury predominantly caused by a traumatic event in the workplace that is not usual or typical Eligibility changes apply to injuries that occurred after 31 March. It’s important to note that changes in compensation eligibility don’t change requirements for employers to ensure a safe working environment, or, to provide appropriate return to work support or accommodations to workers experiencing illness, injury, or disability. You can find out more about WorkCover changes by registering for the upcoming WorkSafe Victoria webinar via the link below (Tuesday 16 April, 10-11am), or visiting the WorkSafe website. This post isn't aimed at any company in particular. It isn't a "all MHFA is rubbish" post. I want to have you all thinking. Is MHFA the be all and end all? We all know that it isn't. It's a great starting point but it is merely a starting point. I can see some divides. I can see the shiny happy MHFA teams in their ivory towers and their nice lanyards and pens. I don't see as much pro active support for the front line workers. I have seen the difference it can make to the site teams when someone who genuinely cares about their wellbeing shows up. I've even had a few tears this week from a few guys I didn't expect to open up to me. Is the divide that great? Is it 50/50 with office staff and frontline? I guarantee it isn't!! If it is, give yourself a pat on the back but if your MHFA team consist of John from IT, Katie from HR, Sophie from Accounts and hairy a$$ Dave the front line worker isn't included then it's time to re-evaluate. The front line teams wont open up to the accountants, the front line teams won't open up to the IT teams and they certainly won't open up to HR or HSEQ. As always, review what is needed. The figures are there. We need to manage mental health and wellbeing better than we currently do. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #beckham

A great post from Craig Paton, are you doing mental health by proxy? Just because you tick the box and appoint mental health first aiders, does management even care? Do your staff have poor mental health because of the poor attitude of management? Having mental health first aiders, is it like providing more first aid kits because poor work practices cause injuries? Let's look at why people have poor mental health before we apply the sticking plaster! Discuss!!
