𝗛𝘆𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆! On May 12, AHTS Skandi Vega and Normand Sigma arrived at the 2017-built Hywind Scotland to commence a complete maintenance operation. After over six years of power generation, the campaign is the first complete maintenance for a floating wind farm and involves disconnecting, towing, servicing, and reconnecting five 6-MW turbines. It is the second worldwide maintenance for a floating wind farm, with both originating in #Scotland and taking place in a port outside the #UK. 🔧𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 Equinor announced in January that all five units needed heavy maintenance. The turbines, mounted on spar foundations, are set to be towed to Norway for overhaul by the Wergeland Group in Gulen. Wergeland port was already used for the Hywind Tampen installation campaign. Due to its location in a fjord, the port benefits from a deep shelter area, allowing it to easily wet store high-draft foundations, which UK ports are currently not equipped to do. The assembly of Hywind Scotland turbines had also taken place in #Norway. 📈 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗞𝗣𝗜𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 This is the second heavy maintenance of a Scottish floating wind farm to take place outside of Scotland. In 2022, two #Kincardine floaters were sent for maintenance in #Rotterdam, some 700 km away. Hywind Scotland's campaign now involves all five floaters as part of planned maintenance. Cadeler confirms that it has placed an order to build its third state-of-the-art A-class wind farm installation vessel. This will be the eleventh vessel in Cadeler’s fleet. We have already signed firm contracts and entered a long-term agreement with Ørsted for our first A-class vessel from 2027 to 2030 and we are in advanced contract negotiations to secure capacity from our second A-class.” The P- and A-class vessels are built in close cooperation with Cadeler’s strategic partners, which include GustoMSC, NOV, Kongsberg Maritime, Huisman and MAN Energy Solutions. 🌊⚡ Want to understand "Tow-to-Port" operations for floating offshore wind? 🚢 As we reported a few weeks ago, we are currently tracking the second-ever tow-to-port campaign at Hywind Scotland (https://lnkd.in/d6xaNnAi). While we gather data from this campaign, let's revisit the only other tow-to port campaigns, which took place at Kincardine in 2022-2023. Key Learnings: ▪ The towing procedure accounted for 44-45% of the total duration of the main task because the floater had to be towed to Rotterdam, NL. A build-out of local ports is needed to avoid long tows. ▪ The second “tow-to-port” campaign saw a 36% decrease in time spent on the towing back and forth from the port, the repair in port, and the main on-site activities. ▪ The reduction in time spent occurred despite using a similar four-vessel marine spread. Improvements were noted across the operation for both the towing duration and the disconnection and re-connection of mooring lines and dynamic cables. 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲'𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 To accommodate large heavy-lift vessels, marshalling ports require a long quayside (with a median length of 315m), significant maximum draft at both quayside (more than 10 meters) and port entry, a large laydown area for the components, and often an onshore crane. The infrastructure requirements are satisfied by many locations in the North Sea region, which handle almost all the activity. In the last five years, the Netherlands and the UK have emerged as the powerhouses in this regard: together marshalling 70% of Europe's offshore wind components. The Netherlands has handled components for all North Sea countries, while the UK's marshalling ports have catered almost exclusively to projects at home. The collective effort from Denmark, Germany, France, Belgium, Norway, Spain, and Italy also underscores Europe's commitment to renewable energy. Still, the data speaks volumes about the region's offshore wind push being very much centralised in two countries for marshalling and installation. In the past five years, the Dutch ports have emerged as the marshalling hub of the North Sea offshore wind industry, serving over a third of the market's needs. Meanwhile, the UK, being the location of the largest offshore wind capacity in the world after China: has needed all the help it could get. The 2000+ components installed off the country's shores have practically been marshalled from all across the continent. As the North Seas Energy Cooperation (#NSEC) foreshadows towards a more ambitious era of offshore wind installation in the region than previously thought, critical infrastructure like ports will need to be seriously scaled up. More than investments, experience from these ports like Port Esbjerg, North Sea Port, Port of Rotterdam, Port of Cromarty Firth and more will be of precious value. #offshorewind

Two of Kincardine's floating turbines suffered a similar fate a year or so ago. Pioneering offshore development is a tough business, and it's clear that equally pioneering engineering solutions, allowing major repair at sea, are needed to maximise the potential to exploit the superior wind resource far from shore, and minimise vessel emissions. Fred. Olsen 1848, Huisman, Liftra, Nekkar, SENSEWind and WindSpider are good examples of those working hard in this space.

The SIM (Strategic Investment Model) announcement out today features a list of 32 offshore wind related port development and manufacturing projects with DeepWind cluster members leading 27 of these projects. Of the two projects going forward to Stage 2 both are DeepWind port members i.e. Port of Cromarty Firth and Global Energy Group at Port of Nigg. Both are also part of the Inverness & Cromarty Firth Green Freeport. The third project, which is also moving to Stage 2, has not yet been made public but is believed to be a major offshore wind manufacturing project. In another major development for the Scottish market the list features a wind turbine project from DeepWind member Mingyang Smart Energy along with a number of other manufacturing projects for offshore wind towers and XXL monopiles, pin piles, micropiles, secondary steel and subsea cables. Should all of these projects come to fruition they represent a huge number of jobs for the offshore wind sector in Scotland. That said, it could take years for some of the projects to be delivered as they rely on orders from the construction of the ScotWind and INTOG leasing round projects.
