Whatever your personal opinions on the supermarket industry, Woolworths Supermarkets or the recent events involving Brad Banducci this is a pivot event we are watching unfold in one of Australia's biggest retailers. And I for one am sad we are losing a great leader from the supermarket ranks.
If you have never worked in the supermarket industry you just don't know how tough the environment is. I and many of my friends have done it for either a good time or a long time and it is one tough MF of a role. But why?
💥 It takes an enormous beast of enthusiasm, energy, leadership and smarts to make these engines work from the smallest corners of the country to the major metropolis and everywhere in-between
💥 The businesses are literally 24/7, 362.5 days a year as one of the largest employers, logistics management hubs, working with product that has to arrive or be made fresh every single day delivered within the hours customers want to get it which has got longer and longer every year
💥 In times of crisis they feed communities, ensure towns have employment and suppliers are helped through tough trading times
💥 They literally feed nations, grow communities and keep the world turning
💥 Brad Banducci has been an incredible leader who had done this with grace, vision, consistency and enormous focus. He has cared for individuals, teams, communities and his people. He is liked, loved, enormously admired and well regarded. Yes, some loath the tactics employed by the organisation and the strategies but he is a quality, thoughtful and generous leader.
I think it is deplorable that the departure of a delightful and admired leader is marked with the controversy of the ABC interview and the grocery enquiry. There are many facets to a leader, leadership and how to keep those operations running. Come across to NZ and see what a real duopoly looks like, but also come over here and try and successfully run a supermarket business at scale.
Go well Brad Banducci. I know you have been one of the most successful leaders in the Woolworths Group business for years. There is an outpouring of shock and sadness and the things I will remember are all the fabulous improvements and enhancements you lead that have contributed to the supermarket sector and raising the level of excellence in retail.
Every week is a big week in retail, which is why I love it, and this is one for me personally too. I am not very good at talking about myself but thought it important to share my internal message to our team at Woolworths which went out a few minutes ago. Thank you to everyone who is helped me over the last 8 years in terms of advice and challenge - keep it coming. Brad

Dear Team
It is with much emotion that I share with you my decision to retire at the end of August 2024 after the announcement of our F24 full-year results. For disclosure reasons, this has just been announced to the Australian Stock Exchange this morning and you can see that announcement here.
This is a decision I have been contemplating for a while especially given it is literally 8 years since my appointment and as we go into the Woolworths Centenary and the timing felt right:
-Not because I am tired or burnt out (I am as energised by our business and our potential as I have ever been) or
-Am worried about the various upcoming price inquiries (I am looking forward to effectively representing Woolworths at these important forums) but
-Because I think a leader should go before they need to and, more importantly, because I believe passionately in the amazing talent in our Group and it is time to pass on the baton.
With this in mind, I am excited to also be able to announce that Amanda Bardwell, Managing Director of WooliesX has been appointed Group CEO designate, stepping into the role in September. I look forward to working closely with Amanda (and all of you) over the next 6 months to set Woolworths Group up for its next chapter. I ask that you provide Amanda with the same amazing support you have given me.
I am very proud of being a member of the Woolies team and it has, and continues to be, a privilege to be your CEO.
I do not intend to go quietly into the night and look forward to working with all of you to help our customers spend less, for us to be rightly famous for the care we show our customers and each other and to continue to be better together.
There will be a time for thanks and farewells but for now it is back to business and Easter beckons.
Words can’t do justice for the way I feel about Woolies or all of you, thank you all for being such an amazing team.
Brad
