Fueling Hope: Food Services Support for Our Community   Here at the Windsor Park LifeCare Trust, we partner with Windsor Park Baptist Church to co-ordinate and deliver our Food Support Services initiative, providing essential assistance to those facing food insecurity in our community. From freezer meals to fresh produce distributions, we're committed to ensuring that no one goes hungry. However, as the need for food assistance grows, so does our determination to expand our efforts and we could really use your help!   Here are a few ways that you or your organization can help:   Donate pantry items to our office during the week (or into the trolleys positioned in the auditorium on a Sunday). Volunteer to help cook and package meals for our Freezer Bank or offer fresh-cooked dishes. Volunteer to pack parcels or assist with the regular Wednesday KiwiHarvest delivery.   As the demand for our services increases weekly, your support could help us reach even more families in need. Over 42 years, our non-profit organization has provided programs distributing supplement food and nutritional information/education to food insecure residents of Washington County. The USDA and Feeding America estimate that there are about 18,800 food-insecure people in Washington County, PA. While there are many great food support programs, it is also estimated that roughly 38% of the food insecure population may not be eligible for traditional, government-funded food programs. It’s hard enough to ask for help, but to then be turned away is unthinkable. Our tagline of “Fresh, Local Food For All” is more than just words: it’s the philosophy we embrace every day. We firmly believe that everyone who lives in North Carolina should have access to the healthy, nutritious, beautiful food that’s grown here. This year, we will contribute 850,000 pounds of local food to the emergency food system – that’s the equivalent of 700,000 meals! Just this week, we were able to deliver 28,640 pounds of nutrient-rich local produce to partner organizations across the Triangle, thanks to the support of our community! In partnership with multiple direct-service agencies, 716 boxes of North Carolina-grown produce and proteins are on their way to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Collective voices call out the Victorian Government, 48 frontline charities demand systemic action on food security! OzHarvest has submitted an open letter to the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into Food Security, supported by 47 charity partners that collectively feed over 62,000 Victorians every month. The problem of food insecurity is immense and growing - addressing it requires systemic changes, it cannot be solved with more food relief alone. Collectively, we are calling on the Victorian Government to address food insecurity at its core by: 1. Reducing poverty and inequality  2. Improving housing and access  3. Ensuring food is affordable While funding for food relief will always be necessary to maintain an essential service for those experiencing food insecurity, more must be done. For our 9th Day of Mindful Christmas we are doing charity shout outs. 🎄 A charity I got particularly connected to during my MScR is FareShare South West. As some of you may know, I spent one year of my academic career carrying out research on sustainable food systems in Bristol. Of course during that time FareShare’s work on surplus food redistribution could not go unnoticed. I was also a volunteer at the Wellspring Settlement Food Club, which partnered with this amazing charity to redistribute food to those suffering from food insecurity. Every year we waste over 3 million tonnes of perfectly good to eat food in the UK, which often has not even reached supermarket shelves before going to the bin. FareShare’s work not only helps avoiding waste, they also help individuals feel less isolated and have better diets, improving both physical and mental health. Their work inevitably helps the environment too, as for every tonne of surplus food they redistribute, they prevent 2 tonnes of CO2e and 2.66 million litres of water from being wasted. Record Numbers at NYC Food Pantries: A Growing Crisis 🍎 New York City food pantries are experiencing unprecedented demand--up 80% from pre-pandemic levels--with many community members facing food insecurity at alarming rates. As the cost of living rises, more families are turning to pantries for essential support. This surge reflects the ongoing challenges our city is facing. At Gotham Food Pantry, we’re witnessing firsthand how critical our role is in addressing this need. It’s not just about providing food—it’s about offering dignity, hope, and a lifeline to those in need. September is Hunger Action Month. Here are five action items individuals can take during Hunger Action Month: 1. Volunteer at a local food pantry – Dedicate your time to help distribute food, organize donations, or support events aimed at fighting hunger in your community. 2. Donate non-perishable items – Collect and donate shelf-stable foods like canned goods, pasta, and rice to local food pantries or food drives. 3. Host a fundraising event – Organize a virtual or in-person fundraiser, such as a bake sale or walkathon, to raise money for your favorite hunger relief organizations. 4. Advocate for food security policies – Contact local representatives to support policies that address food insecurity, such as increased funding for food programs or access to affordable, healthy food. 5. For over two years, Manna has seen skyrocketing demand for food, including to-go meals, and we need your help to cover our rising costs. Manna is currently preparing and providing over 11,000 to-go meals every month, MORE THAN DOUBLE the 5,000 we were preparing and providing in spring 2022. To-go meals offer a convenient way for people to access food. People can take as many meals as they need, and also share them with family and friends who need food. To-go meals are available in meat, pork, seafood and vegetarian options and include an entree, sides, snacks and beverage. As with our sit-down community meals, we provide to-go meals to anyone in need, "no questions asked," in order to be as inclusive and accessible as possible. From time to time, however, we conduct surveys so we can learn and improve. In February and March, Manna conducted a daily survey with all to-go meal guests. Here's a snapshot of our findings: • On average, over 120 people get to-go meals every day. • For every person who gets to-go meals, three people are fed, because people take meals to share with others. • On average, our to-go meals feed over 300 people every day. Even though we use donated food, each to-go meal costs Manna about $4.33 to produce. With the increased amount of meals Manna is distributing, we need your help to cover our increased costs. Ok, let’s consider the results come from a Kiwibank-commissioned survey (n=1,046 nationally representative respondents) in New Zealand 18 years of age and over, conducted between the 24th to the 26th of May 2024 by Talbot Mills Research. It found: • 30% of Kiwi would not have enough money in their accounts to cover an unexpected bill of $500 without borrowing, selling something, or putting it on a credit card. • 39% of savers are managing to save $100 a month or less. • Almost two thirds of Kiwi (63%) are struggling to put money aside for saving with high cost of living cited as the main barrier (73%). • 37% of Kiwi say they don’t have money set aside to cover any unexpected expenses. • 34% of Kiwi say they feel like they are hit with an unexpected expense at least once a month. • 59% of Kiwi have a monthly budget in place. • 41% of Kiwi regularly put money aside while 38% put money aside from time to time. Did you know that over 800,000 people accessed food banks in Ontario between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023? Hunger is one of society’s most pressing issues and why Kindred chose Hunger as one of our social impact focus themes. We aim to work with, and alongside, organizations who seek to make a positive impact in their communities. One of those organizations is Anishnabeg Outreach (AO), who is actively addressing this issue within the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities of the Waterloo Region and Guelph. They meet a variety of social, spiritual, and practical needs in the urban First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. They offer programs focused on children, employment, and healing, as well as a culturally-appropriate food program.
