Learning the intricacies of nuclear power can be daunting at times. Fortunately for me, I spent the last month getting oriented with the Reactor Department and absorbing as much as I could from the crew of USS Ronald Reagan. Thanks to CAPT Daryle Cardone, CAPT Harry Evans, CMC Tychicious Turner, and CAPT Chris Green, this has been the best experience I’ve had along this journey to date. One more step along this nuclear aviation path complete. Next stop - Naval Reactors.

Ike White joined National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Naval Reactors leaders on Capitol Hill to testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Strategic Forces Committee on Armed Services on their missions and commitments supporting U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s FY 2025 budget request.   In White’s opening statement, he emphasized EM’s commitment to cleaning up the environmental legacy of national defense programs that helped end World War II and the Cold War, stating that, “while our mission is rooted in the past, we’re focused on the future.”   White’s testimony highlights EM’s 35 years of progress, transformational results, steady progress planned for FY 2025, support for national security missions and how EM is investing in the future. The budget request allows for continued improvement to the rigor of program and project management, as well as opportunities to progress cleanup safely and more efficiently,   EM appreciates the Biden administration’s commitment to our vital mission. On this day in 1955, history was made when the USS Nautilus became the first submarine to operate on nuclear power and at exactly 11 am ET, the historic phrase "Underway on nuclear power" was spoken for the first time. This achievement marked a significant milestone in the history of naval warfare and sparked a new era of innovation in the industry. Today, we remember this momentous occasion and celebrate the progress made in the field of nuclear energy. #USSNautilus #NuclearPower #NavalInnovation

Hooyah! Not an easy program to be sure, but the Navy nuclear power program imbues you with skills and learning techniques that have a wide range of applications. How many Navy Nukes here have made thier way into Information Security?

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the launch of the U.S.S. Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, built for the U.S. Navy by General Dynamics Electric Boat. The reactor supplied by Westinghouse Electric Company gave Nautilus clear advantages in speed, stealth and endurance compared to traditional diesel-electric submarines -- which are limited to battery power when fully submerged. Nautilus could maintain a top submerged speed of more than 20 knots virtually indefinitely. By comparison, the Barbel class of diesel-electric submarines, which debuted for the Navy in 1959, would run out of battery power in less than an hour at those speeds. Alternately, the Barbel class could remain submerged for 102 hours by limiting its speed to 3 knots. Not only did the Nautilus revolutionize naval propulsion, but it also helped spur the commercial nuclear industry by demonstrating the reliability and effectiveness of nuclear reactors. We see that being repeated today as the U.S. military is helping to pioneer the development and deployment of microreactor designs that can meet national security needs but could also be used to meet civilian requirements.

The 70 years of dithering on the benefits of nuclear energy should now cease. We should exploit this gift of nature to the full. Fossil fuels, and worse renewables, cannot touch the reliability and environmental benefits of nuclear. https://lnkd.in/eSBCSR9

Thomas Nix of Air Force Research Laboratory, Dr. Tabitha Dodson of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Michael Smith of United States Department of Defense. Panelists discussed the role of nuclear power in space missions and the challenges and opportunities surrounding it. #POCspace2024
