I 100% agree with Florida’s “universal school choice” initiative. Students should not be restricted to schools in their zip code. Public schools are not all bad, and non-public school options are not all good. But this is the point: parents and students should have the option to CHOOSE. As North Carolina teachers return to classrooms this fall, many—like veteran first-grade teacher Sarah Lewis—are spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars of their own money to make sure their students have basic supplies. North Carolina ranks near the bottom of the list nationwide for per-pupil funding and for teacher salaries. Meanwhile, our teachers pay roughly $400 MORE than the national average ($915) out of their own wallets to supply their classrooms. Efforts to address the issue include proposed legislation from Democratic Rep. Julie von Haefen, and Gov. Roy Cooper’s School Supply Drive.
