We need to shift the way we think about College Education. If you're STEM major (I'd even add 'T' to the end for Teaching to that) blessings to you too! You are backbones to our economy. But if you are the English, Sociology, Anthropology (like me), the History, Astrobiology, and etc... Your degree still entitles you how to think about the world around you and gives you the hard skills that are so needed. It is the meat on your platter. It just needs the gravy, your sides and some garnish to be paired with it. Your 'pairing' is, how can I start applying this where I am at? No matter how mundane it might seem. It could be the internship, the volunteering service, writing the book or blogging, or creating the illustrative narrative for your current company's history timeline. Begin your work!

Internships are crucial in the social research field for several reasons. Firstly, they provide practical, hands-on experience that complements academic learning. This can include data collection, analysis, and report writing, giving sociology students a real-world understanding of how research is conducted. Secondly, internships offer opportunities to network with professionals in the field, potentially leading to job opportunities or valuable references in the future. Additionally, internships allow students to explore different areas within social research, helping you to identify your interests and strengths. Overall, internships serve as a bridge between academic training and professional practice, enhancing students employability and readiness for a career in social research.

My time as a Program Management and Operations Intern at Finer Life Golf Foundation, Incorporated gave me a sense of direction. Getting a sociology degree can take someone in pretty different directions that require different skills. This internship gave me the opportunity to develop skills that are useful in every field that interests me: grant writing and, specifically, storytelling, are useful in government, nonprofits, and other advocacy work, as well as data analysis and visualization. This internship prepared me for any job where I have to communicate my findings, address a need, or advocate for a solution to the person who gets things done, and that’s all of them. I also really appreciated that LJ had us take time out of every day to develop our Linkedin profiles. I had started an account previously, but I didn’t know what to do with it, and LJ (and Ronald Arevalo!) really did a good job of turning my empty profile into an active, engaged one. Through her advice, I have several new job leads, and professional connections who’ve offered their help and advice as I take the next step on my professional journey.  This brings me to my next point. Today doesn’t just mark the end of this internship for me. I received credits for the work I did during this internship from the sociology department at CUNY Hunter College, and the completion of this internship also marks the acquisition of the last few credits I needed to graduate. "Education is beyond the four walls of the classroom" In today’s fast-paced and ever-evolving world, the concept of education is no longer limited to textbooks, lectures, and exams, true education encompasses a broad spectrum of experiences that prepare individuals for the challenges and opportunities of life. From a young age, I was taught that learning happens everywhere. My parents encouraged me to seek knowledge from unexpected places. They believed that every interaction, every challenge, and every adventure held valuable lessons. One of the most impactful experiences in my educational journey occurred during a summer internship . Each day presented a new set of challenges that required creative thinking, and smart strategies. I quickly realized that these real-world experiences taught me more about communication, problem-solving, and adaptability than any classroom ever could. Similarly, volunteer work has been a cornerstone of my education. Engaging with diverse communities, understanding their needs, and working collaboratively to create solutions has been incredibly enlightening. These experiences have fostered empathy, leadership, and a deep sense of social responsibility. Technology, too, has played a pivotal role in expanding the boundaries of education. With the advent of online courses, virtual workshops, and digital resources, learning has become more accessible than ever before. Travel has also been an extraordinary teacher. Every journey has been a lesson in history, geography, and sociology, enriching my knowledge and appreciation of the world. Let us commit to lifelong learning, driven by curiosity, passion, and a desire to create a better future for ourselves and others. It's been a minute since I've given any career/professional updates. I am glad to annouce that this summer, I have the sweet opportunity to be a Belonging (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Accessibility) Intern at Krispy Kreme. I will be working directly under Christopher Bylone van Sandwyk at the Charlotte, North Carolina location. I am looking forward to assisting in creating and fostering a culture of belonging & inclusivity for a well-known company. Also, in the Fall, I have the opportunity to be attending THE North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. I will be in their Post-Baccaulatre Studies program with the intention and determination of joining the English and African Amercian Literature Masters Program. What is PBS you may ask? PBS stands for Post-Baccaulate Studies; which basically means due to my performance during my undergradute years, I will need to take a certain amount of graduate-level courses before I can officially enter my desired Masters program. Once I take a specfic amount of courses, I will be able to officially declare my desired Master's program: English and African American Literature. Most people wouldn't share this because it isn't the traditional route that many students take; however, I am coming to accept that God never intended for me to be tradiontional. Don't be afraid to walk paths that seem empty and that no one have walked before. Having courage and walking those paths make you a trailblazer.
