It is Friday, July 12th 2024. Over a year after being terminated, for speaking up against a toxic work environment. My green banner is still flying high, despite the negative wrap it gets. I am Open to Work, I am open to contribute my 2 decades worth of skill to a collaborative team, and am looking for something long term, and passion aligned. Outside of my administrative prowess, operational knowledge, and project management skills, I am also a Doula, I am also a grieving care giver, and a special needs parent. My passions all point to equality in care, reproductive justice, inclusion, and defeating racism in every way honestly because, I have lived a life of inequality of care, reproductive injustice and mistreatment and blatant and covert racism, so I know it's all real and not just hashtags. I have been advised to remove my passion work from my resume and Linkedin account and focus on my functional skills. However, I think my passions are my skills. At the ripe old age of 38, I honestly have no desire to work in any space that doesn't allow all of me. I am sure that could be limiting my job search, but I don't care. I want to wake up everyday and know that my work is making a change for marginalized communities. I want to see the difference my work makes for future generations. At our core, we're passionate about promoting human rights, advocating for sexual and reproductive health, and striving for the elimination of violence through peaceful conflict resolution. "I’m 7 months pregnant and was put in a performance improvement plan because I’m too emotional… I lead our nonprofit’s marketing team.".. Really?... This was a post on a women's career network. What employer will subject a pregnant women to this? During women's history month let's not forget we are far from any kind of equality. There are far too many women who face discrimination pre any pregnancy (in case they might have children, I used to be asked this gem), those who face discrimination upon returning (sorry but no bonus, no merit, no commissions etc) and then the discrimination of perceived commitment (i.e are you really working or just raising your kids when you work at home). HR leaders, CEOs, if you want to have true diversity check your policies and culture to make sure you are really supporting women in the workplace. Western societies are facing demographic decline. It is in everyone's interest to support mums to be and mothers.

Working mothers remain ambitious and committed, despite what the motherhood penalty leads people to think. As Jackie* says; “That’s why we’re such great employees. We will move heaven and earth to get stuff delivered by a deadline.” Like many strong performers, Jackie finds plenty of non-promotable tasks get sent her way. In fact, women generally volunteer more, get asked more, and are more likely to say yes to those tasks that keep you busy but don’t necessarily advance your career. Her advice? When asked what I desire in my next role, I emphasize mission-driven work. I want to work with a team driven by their mission. I want to work. Currently, that's the mission that drives me. Since I started my #JobSearch this past spring, I've submitted 200+ applications. Some organizations have reviewed 5-10 apps for various roles I desired, whereas others had one opportunity for me. Those 200+ applications have gone to 87 organizations. I have apps for 6 other roles in the works (heads up to Merit America, UNITED WAYS OF IOWA, Vot-ER, The Woke Coach, LLC, Borealis Philanthropy, and Reproductive Freedom for All). Furthermore, it's essential to empower women as entrepreneurs, wives, and mothers, allowing them to thrive in all aspects of their lives while contributing to the strength and resilience of families, communities, and nations. This is an important initiative to remember and share with our friends! Despite advancements in parental leave policies, mothers often disproportionately bear the career setbacks following extended absences, such as maternity leave. A brief pause can significantly impact one's professional trajectory, exacerbating the struggle to catch up in an environment that evolves by the minute. Recognizing this, Her Allies has launched "Her Re-Launch," a six-month career strategy program tailored specifically for women. This initiative aims to bridge the gap, equipping women with the tools, confidence, and support needed to overcome biases, navigate rapid changes in skill requirements, and combat imposter syndrome. It's a crucial step toward fostering a more inclusive and supportive professional landscape and a reminder of the need for more programs that empower women to successfully re-integrate into their careers and regain lost momentum.
