Today we’re celebrating a major step towards closing the #supergendergap following the Government’s commitment to legislate the payment of super on the Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay Scheme. Rest has long advocated for super to be paid on parental leave, says Rest CEO Vicki Doyle. “This is a much-needed improvement for our two million members, including the more than one million who are women. We know every super dollar counts for these members, who often work in low income, part time or casual jobs. "This change will undoubtedly help enable a more equitable retirement future and go some way to address the gender super gap. We congratulate the Federal Government on this important reform," she said. “Rest supports the payment of super on every dollar earned, including on all forms of parental leave. Now that we have certainty that super will be paid on Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay, we want to encourage further discussion on the payment of super on employer-funded parental leave. At long last! Fantastic to welcome the Federal Government’s announcement today that super will be paid on the Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay scheme, ending a longstanding inequity in our retirement system that’s unfairly disadvantaged women. For over a decade HESTA has tirelessly advocated for this important equity measure, as well as other reforms, and we’ll keep pushing for policy makers to make improving women’s retirement outcomes a top priority. More than 80% of our one million-plus members are women, many of whom work in typically lower paid industries such as aged care or early childhood education. Paying super on paid parental leave is a key equity measure that will help our members add much-needed dollars to their retirement accounts, narrowing the gender super gap and making Australia’s super system fairer for everyone. Wonderful news for HESTA members and the women of Australia, more than a decade in the making! So pleased to welcome the Federal Government’s announcement ahead of International Women’s Day that super will be paid on the Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay scheme, addressing a longstanding gender-blind spot in our retirement system. Every extra dollar our members can add to their super can really make a difference when they retire. Many HESTA members are women with lower account balances as they often work in casual, part-time or insecure work or in industries that are typically lower paid, like aged care and early childhood education. For over 13 years HESTA has advocated for this important equity measure, which will give women’s retirement savings a much-needed boost and help close the gender super gap, as women are currently much more likely to be the ones taking parental leave. Women are retiring with less in super than men, and this is one big reason why. It's outdated and unfair, so we're changing it. We're adding superannuation to government paid parental leave starting from 2025. And we're extending paid parental leave to six months by 2026, with the flexibility to choose how to split it between parents. These reforms are another way we're supporting working families.

Big news! The 2024-25 Budget has integrated superannuation with government-funded parental leave. Eligible parents will now get an extra 12% of their Paid Parental Leave (PPL) payments added to their super fund. At the end of Women's History Month, I find myself reflecting on the fact that, in the world of disability and leave insurance, we are at an interesting point in women's history. Fourteen states have now passed mandatory Paid Family and Medical Leave laws that provide benefits for an employee's own disability, caring for a sick family member, and bonding with a new child. These programs are essential to helping all employees, but especially women, balance their work and family lives and remain in the workforce rather than leaving their jobs. There has also been a steady expansion in parental leave benefits offered by employers, separate from the state PFML plans. Our research shows the prevalence and duration of these benefits have increased in recent years. And the programs have also evolved to remove distinctions between primary and secondary caregivers, which could be an unintended source of gender-based inequality in benefits plans. The US has lagged behind many other countries in the level of parental leave benefits provided to employees, and it is good to see that changing, even if there is a long way to go. Women, in particular, face enough professional challenges without having to sacrifice jobs they care about in order to start a family and properly care for themselves and others.
