The Women Empowerment Council's #GirlsinSTEMM program visited Hewlett Packard Enterprise China's headquarters on March 26. Students from four Beijing international schools explored HPE's history, culture, and innovation in technology. Michael Zhu, HPE's Global Vice President and Managing Director of China, welcomed the students, emphasizing HPE's support for STEMM education and women in tech. Echo Li, the Human Resources Director, discussed HPE's corporate culture and #genderequality initiatives. A highlight was the Mini Laboratory session, where students dismantled and reassembled servers to complete connectivity tasks led by instructors Wanjin Jia and Qian Yun. This hands-on experience fostered teamwork and interest in hardware technology. Students also participated in a Truth or Dare game with executives. Michael Zhu and some outstanding female executives shared their growth stories, encouraging students to pursue dreams, set goals, and learn from failures. #AI was another key topic. During our classes at MIT Professional Education we not only learned about technology but also on the relevance as a leader and as a person to foster diversity and inclusion. Professor Reza Rahaman made as think on how our characteristics of gender, culture or ethnicity and character, among others, has been positive or negative in our life/career development. We had to choose positive or negative. There was no grey alternative. Everybody had to sit in one side or the other of the room and explain why. - On gender for me was positive. I developed my career as Engineer in an industrial company were the prevailing gender was and still is male. - On culture and ethnicity was also positive. I had the privilege to be part of a company that bought companies around the world and the strongest group was Latin of origin. - On character it was also positive because I am adaptive by nature. I could generate empathy with all groups and communicate up and down an across with a consistent message. The important question came in the end of the discussion. What have we done from our position in life or in the company to improve diversity and inclusion. I am proud to say that I have consistently pushed throughout my career to improve integration and promote opportunities particularly for women and people coming from outside the company or from different countries. Even pushing the limits of what was expected, particularly in the hybrid world. That is the challenge. To acknowledge where we are and commit to improve diversity and inclusion with all the elements that we have at hand. It starts with us.

⭐ Happy Friday, everyone! We wanted to share some exciting insights from McKinsey on addressing the diversity gap in tech. The diversity gap in technology can be examined from two key perspectives. First, many young women may perceive the industry as an exclusive 'boys' club,' believing that unless they follow a traditional educational and career path, there is no place for them. This perception likely contributes to the fact that in 2021, only 22% of computing degrees were awarded to women. However, this is just one part of the equation (Spitz, 2023). The second perspective focuses on the structural challenges within the industry. As mentioned in McKinsey’s interview with Judith Spitz, Ph.D. founder of Break Through Tech, not all young people have the luxury of participating in hackathons or attending top-tier universities. Some individuals must shoulder adult responsibilities early in life, limiting their ability to invest fully in their future careers. This does not reflect a lack of potential but rather unequal access to opportunities—a distinction that is crucial. Companies should consider rethinking their hiring practices to better evaluate potential, rather than relying solely on traditional markers of privilege. Programs like 'Break Through Tech' are exemplary in this regard. Recognizing that internships may not always be the first step for everyone, this initiative offers alternative pathways for individuals to demonstrate their capabilities before entering the industry. Through this program, over 1,000 women have secured internships or full-time positions, a promising indication of progress. "By the end of the first year of postsecondary education, 2.6 percent of female and 1.8 percent of male P-TECH 9-14 students had earned degrees, compared with virtually no students from the comparison group, of either gender. These impacts for both genders are statistically significant". "Male students who had the chance to attend P-TECH 9-14 schools were more likely to attain college degrees than male students assigned to other kinds of schools".
