After photographing golf courses for over 15 years, I’ve picked up a few handy tips along the way. And as it’s good to share, I thought I’d spread the love and give you the inside scoop. In the first of a series of short articles looking at how to make the most of a golf course photoshoot, we’re kicking things off by looking at timing. Now when I say timing, I’m not referring to the sacred art of coinciding a shoot with optimal weather conditions. I could write a multi-volume anthology about that! No, in this case we’re talking about when during the year is the best time to plan a photoshoot - which season offers the best chance to optimise your shoot. Ultimately, the timing of a photoshoot will depend on the type of course you have and its location. Your photographer should help you make that decision and/or provide you with options (a one, two or three-day shoot plan, or an ongoing arrangement). Saying that, the greatest source of wisdom will always be your course manager. Here are some options to consider: Early season - advantages include getting your photography done early giving you the option to use the images during the season ahead. Disadvantages include a lack of grass growth (therefore definition), tree coverage, colour etc. Mid season - advantages include better weather, longer days, more light and improving conditions. Disadvantages include more traffic on the course and shorter windows of ‘good’ light. Late season - advantages are better definition and improving light conditions. Possible disadvantages include poorer weather and maintenance plans. If you’re interested in a more in-depth look at making the most of a golf course photoshoot, let me know. I've created a pdf cheat sheet that gives you a quick and easy checklist to optimize your shoot. Equally, if you’re looking to get your course photographed or videoed, let me know. I’d be happy to chat through some options and ideas. https://lnkd.in/ec6mW4q5 #golf #golfmarketing #golfphotography #golfcoursephotography #golfclub #golfresort #golfcourse

This is the final installment a series of four posts about my approach to golf course photography. This edition concerns using images after the shoot. After the Shoot: Protect Your Brand! Once you have your images, the first step is to back them up on a secure server. Utilize a digital asset management (DAM) tool like Bynder, Brandfolder, Adobe Lightroom, or Photoshop. Ensure your images are stored in a searchable, shareable, and secure database to prevent loss and enable easy access. I've seen projects suffer because photos were lost during staff transitions. Secure storage is crucial. Once your photos are safe, the fun starts. Share a few images with industry friends—golf writers, travel writers, bloggers, vloggers—to create buzz. This has generated countless stories for my clients. Develop a database of writers who are eager for a new story. I recommend my clients choose their top five favorite images from the shoot. Create high- and low-resolution versions of these and store the rest in your DAM tool. Use these five images as the core of your marketing. Include them in all your marketing and PR initiatives. Ensure these images become synonymous with your brand so that anyone seeing them immediately recognizes your course. Monitor your image use to avoid overexposure, like repetitive ads that lose effectiveness. One final tip: Only use approved photos. A client in Scottsdale once allowed an unapproved aerial photo on a golf guide cover, showing their course under construction. This image, seen by hundreds of thousands, likely harmed their first-year business. Control your image, control your brand. Just don’t call it a menage! Agnes owns a holiday property which caters to people who love all things equestrian. 🐎 Her guests have the use of a wing of her house for their stay and can choose from any of her horses to ride for the day. The rate even includes riding lessons for children under 12. She commissioned me to shoot a drone image capturing the house, riding arena and expanse of land beyond to show the lifestyle her guests can look forward to during their stay. 👀 Agnes seems a placid type but if there is one thing that gets her goat it is uninformed people trying to sound clever and calling the riding arena a “menage”. “It’s a riding arena, but if you have to show off, it’s called a manege. A MENAGE is something quite different and nothing to do with horses”. 🐴 If you avoid that particular faux pas, you’ll not only find a warm welcome awaiting you at her farm, but as Agnes is an accomplished baker, there'll be some warm bread too! Think that your spaces would benefit from professional photography? Then let’s chat. Head over to my LinkedIn profile and book a call. I’d love to hear about your hospitality business. 📞 What mispronunciation drives you mad? Golf Course Photography: Celebrating 40 Years This September marks the beginning of my 40th year as a golf course photographer. Hard to believe, but in all these years, I've never written down the key considerations I have every time I walk into a pro shop, pick up my golf cart, and get to work. Many people think golf course photographers just show up at any time of day and snap pictures with their phones and slap them up on the internet. While I see this happen often, those who take this approach are wasting time and money on promotions and advertisements. Our customer base is highly discerning and can tell the difference between a mediocre image and a great image and immediately associate those feelings with the facility featured in the ad or story. They might not always be able to articulate why an image stands out, but they definitely recognize if there is something off. Over the next few days, I'll share my thoughts on: 1. Actions taken prior to an assignment (see below) 2. How a typical assignment works 3. My philosophies on creating the best work for my customers 4. Protecting your brand with compelling imagery Prior to the Assignment During the initial phone call or Zoom meeting, I focus on understanding the superintendent's schedule, future weather conditions, and any deadlines the marketing team has. Timing is crucial. I also discuss the intended use of the images, the message they want to convey, and whether they need a few standout shots, a comprehensive portfolio of every hole, or both. Knowing if there's a "signature hole" or a specially designed area is also important, as it’s my job to highlight their largest investments while making sure I perfectly represent the intent of the designer, the hard work of the superintendent and the messaging required of the marketing staff or ad agency.
