One of my proudest moments came when my phone number appeared on a giant "space to let" signage. True to form, the calls started coming in. But there was a big problem. It looked like some callers were more interested in shopping around for rental values than taking up space in our facility. I'll give them the asking rent, but I'll hear nothing from them again. Follow-up calls went unanswered, let alone scheduled visits to inspect the vacant spaces. That frustrated me. Using what little I'd learned about marketing and consumer behavior, I took a different approach. When people called and asked about the rent, I countered by asking how much space they needed and what they needed the space for. Before long, the conversation shifted from the asking rent to the benefits their business could enjoy if they rented retail space in our facility. Soon, a few curious callers would pass by to check out the available space, much better than the no-show from earlier callers. While potential tenants care about rent the meter square your property asks for, many other variables matter just as much. If you can sell tenants on the (business) benefits they could enjoy in your facility, it’s easier to justify the asking rent. But even if you’re not letting space, the same principle applies to your business. Always look for benefits and experiences you can sell buyers beyond discounted prices. How sustainable are those price-cutting strategies? And remember, someone will always do it cheaper than you anyway. But with the unique benefits and experiences you can give customers, it’s hard for anyone to outdo you. Yes, price matters. But even more crucial are the benefits and experiences buyers get from your product/service. The latter wins more often.

Teaching the culture outside your #design organization to value #creativity comparably to how it values #productivity requires deep empathy with leaders and teams who think very differently and have different #structures, #goals, and #metrics for success. It's tempting for leaders whose performance is evaluated purely based on productivity to embrace principles of #innovation like "fail fast" as synonyms for "get it over with." You can tell you're in an organization that doesn't genuinely value innovation or creativity when engineers are invited to participate in infrequent "innovation sprints" in which they're given a few days to explore—and then drop—product ideas on "their own time," at the end of which the only ideas that make the cut for further exploration are the ones that were on the road map anyway. That's not the flourishing of a creative culture; that's a #cynical play for leadership to stretch production hours into the time their employees have reserved to explore the best they have to offer. Teaching others to value—and yet not exploit—the deepest impulses for creativity in their teams, and to harness that energy to inspire themselves, each other, and ultimately their customers, is one of the hardest things a genuine #leader can do, and one of the most valuable to any organization that wants to separate itself from the pack.
