The report, published in June, found that the level of interest in moving away from relationships with wealth managers and instead setting up a single family office, the better to address the specific requirements of the family, is growing rapidly. The report identified that as many as 52% of the UHNW persons questioned by Capgemini want to set up their own single family office. The recently released 2024 UBS Global Family Office Report, the largest of its kind, surveyed 320 family offices across seven regions, representing over USD 600 billion in wealth. Here are some notable insights: 1/ In 2023, family offices increased allocations to developed market fixed income by 4 percentage points to 16%, the largest jump in five years, while decreasing real estate from 13% to 10%. 2/ 58% cite geopolitical conflict as the top near-term concern, while 62% see it as a key 5-year risk along with climate change (49%) and debt crises (48%). 3/ 39% rely more on active management for diversification (up 4% from 2023). 47% now use high-quality short duration fixed income in portfolios. 3/ 47% view sustainability as essential for managing financial and non-financial risks. 42% see it providing attractive investment and business opportunities. 5/ Over 5 years, 38% plan to increase North America allocations and 35% in Asia-Pacific (ex-China), but home-region bias prevails. 5/ The average family office manages $1.3 billion for 7 family members, with 66% employing 10 or fewer staff, primarily focused on investments. 👉 Our 2 Cents: Family offices are navigating an increasingly complex landscape. One of the critical issues highlighted in the report is the lack of professionalisation in many Family Offices. Reportedly, only 56% of Family Offices globally have an investment committee and just 44% have a documented investment process. This gap is especially pronounced in regions such as Switzerland and Southeast Asia.
