"My forwards only need to run 15 meters, unless they’re either stupid or asleep" - Johan Cruyff
It's not about how much you run, it's how you position yourself, knowing when and where to make a run. While playing at Barca, both Romario (pictured) and Messi were famous for running less than the rest of the players, yet, they were assisting and scoring the most. Throughout his career, Messi has been criticized for walking. After an El Clasico match between Barcelona and Real Madrid in December 2017, there was widespread coverage of the fact that Messi walked 83 percent of the roughly 5 miles he covered that game. Despite this, he scored and assisted in Barca’s 3-0 win. Messi walks better than most players run. This is the essence of the Positional play: players move together as a unit, control possession, position themselves in the high value areas, which in turn removes the need to run long distances (preserving energy in the process).
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast
Players (workers)… slow down, be considered, conserve energy. It is the ball (the work) that should move quickly around the team to arrive in the back of the onion bag.
Maximize the effort not expended.
Banish busyness.
Keep the courage to have your conservation of energy misinterpreted as laziness. There will always be critics, but the more success this method garners, the fewer critics there will be.
Every now and then someone will criticize Messi but no one listens to them... he is the GOAT!
