Today an post of my privat passion "Yesterday a blessing, today a curse" A study about the climate resilience of wine regions in Europe, such an incredible collection of data. The European system of geographical indications, for a long time a blessing for Europe's wine industry, will become a disadvantage for certain regions over the years: Climate change, the sensitivity of a region and its ability to adapt, the regulations only provide for a few grape varieties for a designated area, winegrowers have little room for manoeuvre if they want to retain the protected designation of origin. With the pending dropping of China tariffs on Australian wine, I am resharing this great piece by Master of Wines Phil Reedman MW we published a couple weeks ago. “We need to begin marketing to the world. The World. Not one market, but lots of markets concurrently. We know how good our wines are. Sadly, the world does not. Starved of proper funding, and an equitable distribution of funds to different markets, only one market, the one we no longer have, has had any meaningful attention in the last half a dozen years. In a previous life I was told by one of New Zealand’s biggest wineries that I couldn’t have more wine for the UK market because they had 42 other markets to look after. This is the place we need to get Australia to: too many markets, too little wine. It is time for a generational funding model to begin building a hill from which we can wave the Australian wine flag.” For a sector now in all worlds of pain, hopefully this is the restarting of Australian wine conquering the world, not just China. A statistic I heard last week is that with changing habits, China is now a third of the size it was pre-tariffs. A fitting time for an enhanced global strategy at an individual winery, region and sector level.

This! Any Australians out there need to read and consider it carefully. First, lessons need to be learned from the last vine-pull when irreplaceable plots were ripped up. The European distillation model should be adopted - on a one-off basis And Australia has to look beyond China, UK and US, all of which, for their own reasons, hold limited prospects China is now consuming half as much as in 2012 and France and Chile have climbed into the part of the (now far-smaller) bed Australia previously occupied. They won't be easy to shift. And the baijiu producers will continue to keep wine down. The post-Brexit UK economy is - and will remain - a basket case where selling premium/super-premium wine is a struggle In the US, it is foolish to imagine that US distributors are ever going to want to help premium / super-premium Cabernet and Chardonnay that competes with the ones being made by their own domestic industries (And, don't forget that the Donald has threatened a 10% tariff on ALL imports) So, as Phil says, look at the scores of other markets. It will take a lot more work - by individual wineries. But it's a far wiser strategy than any we can see right now
