California Vintners Report Exceptional Quality for 2023 Harvest California vintners are celebrating the 2023 vintage as exceptional, following a late start to harvest. Plentiful winter rains revitalized the soils and encouraged healthy canopies while cooler temperatures across California in spring and summer allowed grapes to develop gradually, enjoying extra ripening time. Many vintners predict that the 2023 vintage will be one of the finest in years, producing wines with beautiful flavors, vibrant acidity and remarkable balance. #faces The second life of Jean-Christophe Coubris The civilisation of wine is often presented as a closed, coded and sometimes cryptic world. But that is forgetting that, for centuries, it has always welcomed newcomers into its fold, that these newcomers have sometimes raised the vineyard or vineyards they were responsible for to the highest standards in their region and that, most of the time, these novices in the vineyard have made a major contribution to changing the face of their industry. Since the beginning of this decade, Jean-Christophe Coubris has divided his professional life into two very distinct worlds, but with equally deep roots. Son of a lawyer, he himself became one of the leading figures in the field of personal injury law, from medical malpractice to road or industrial accidents. The same family roots led the Coubris family to take charge of Château La Mouline, a classic Moulis wine (now classified as an exceptional Cru Bourgeois). In 2022, Jean-Christophe took over from his brother, bringing with him as many ideas as inspiration. The La Moulinette cuvée, bottled in bourguignonne, marketed as a Vin de France rather than a Medoc appellation, and vinified without sulphur, opens the ball by responding to the Bordeaux bashing with a strong argument: pleasure. This is a highly original entry in a range that continues with Château La Mouline, a more classic appearance, but still vinified without sulphur and with a maturity of fruit that is well enhanced by ambitiously controlled ageing. Prolix like any good lawyer, Jean-Christophe Coubris lets loose with a third cuvée combining Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, matured for up to two years in new barrels and in 'Eggonum', an egg-shaped vat combining stainless steel and wood. This parallel life is off to a good start, and we'll be following it with interest. We are taking a few minutes from our hectic schedule through America’s PREMIER cool-climate region to share these vineyard views! This winemaking region possesses a few key similarities to the Mosel region of Germany: - A cool continental climate with very cold (sometimes freezing) winters, warm summers and a long, cool autumn. - Mosaics of soil types across the gentle to steeply-sloped vineyards oriented towards bodies of water, which help to moderate vineyard temperatures during extreme weather events (notably in winter). - The importance of Riesling, the cold-hardy Vitis vinifera grape variety which thrives in these very cold conditions. - A wide range of types and styles of wines produced, especially from Riesling; still and sparkling, from dry to medium to sweet (and even Ice Wine)! Can you guess the winemaking region we are visiting this week? Let us know in the comments. #riesling #winesoftheworld #alwayslearning #alwaystasting #tastesavoir #tasteknowledge

Over the years, the role and importance of barrels in the world of wine have continually evolved. In the last decades, there has been an increasing focus on one of the most critical elements in barrel making: the oak variety. 🌳 Different oak species impart distinct characters to wines, making the species of the wood crucial in the production of quality barrels. In many of the world's wine regions, various oak species often intermingle, frequently resulting in a significant hybrid ratio, which presents challenges in barrel crafting. Sessile oak (Quercus Petraea) gives wines a particularly elegant and refined character, but its homogeneous occurrence is rare. We, at KADAR Hungary, source our raw material exclusively from a specific region, the Inner Northern Carpathian. More information about Quercus Petraea ⇢ https://lnkd.in/dj4eX2Dd #kadarhungary #kadarbarrels #cooperage #hungarianoak #quercuspetraea #sessileoak

Grenache, deeply rooted in the Mediterranean, has earned its place as one of the most adaptable and expressive grape varieties. Originating in Spain and flourishing in France's Rhône Valley, Grenache is celebrated for its versatility—capable of producing everything from bright, fruit-forward wines to deeper, more complex expressions. In Paso Robles, Grenache reveals a character all its own. The region’s unique calcareous soils, rich in limestone, enhance the grape’s natural vibrancy, allowing for a wine that is as colorful as it is flavorful. Here, Grenache develops lively raspberry and strawberry aromas, with a touch of spice that adds intrigue. The bright, vibrant color of our Grenache is a direct reflection of the intensity and purity of the fruit. What makes our Grenache truly special is how it mirrors the essence of Paso Robles. The balance of ripe red fruit flavors with soft tannins and a hint of spice creates a wine that’s full of character. It’s a wine that speaks to the unique terroir of our region, offering a taste of the land in every glass, and showcasing just how beautifully Grenache can thrive here.

L’Insolito 2021: The colour is medium straw. On the nose citrusy, but not very expressive. In the mouth nutty, with a freshness that makes the mouth water. The aftertaste is medium long. This Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC is made by Vicari winery in Morrro d’Alba. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico is a subzone of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC in the Marche region of Italy, the oldest winegrowing areas around Jesi. Both superiore DOC and riserva DOCG wines are made within the classico zone. The use of Verdicchio has been documented in the Marche region of central Italy since the 14th Century, but there is suggestion that the variety could have originated in Veneto, where it is known as Trebbiano di Soave. Historians believe that Venetians migrated to the Marche area after the plague, bringing animals and plants, and it is thought that Verdicchio was among these. The variety adapted well to Marche's terroir. Verdicchio is a versatile variety, used both for light, easy-drinking table wines, and for more complex, ageworthy examples. It is commonly lauded by critics as being one of Italy's best white wine grape varieties. For this bottle I paid 14.50 EUR directly at the winery, when I visited it during last year’s All Saints Holidays.

Viña Norte Tinto Barrica 2022: The colour is medium purple. On the nose herbaceous and woody. In the mouth agreeably astringent. The aftertaste is medium long. The phylloxera-free Canaries are among only a few places in the world to have ungrafted vitis vinifera vines. Some are over 200 years old, and many are exclusive to the islands: there are 20 recognized unique grape varieties. Listán Blanco and Listán Negro are the most widely planted grapes varieties on the islands. Listán Blanco is originally from Jerez de la Frontera, where it’s known as Palomino Fino. Listán Negro is a natural crossing of Mollar Cano and Palomino Fino. This red wine is based on Listán Negro and matures for four months in American and French oak barrels. It is a simple but honest wine made by Bodegas Insulares Tenerife under the Tacoronte-Acentejo DO. For this bottle I paid 9.55 EUR at Spar in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria.

Celebrate SA Shiraz Day on 25 July with a toast to our Lady J Syrah, the proud double gold winner from both Gilbert and Gaillard and National Wine Challenge. Our Lady J Syrah is a wine of great elegance and power, showcasing the exceptional quality and character of the Simonsberg-Paarl region. Rich, full-bodied with layers of ripe black fruit flavours, dark chocolate and smoky oak, balanced by velvety tannins and vibrant acidity - https://lnkd.in/eJ7p3_6p But what’s the difference between Syrah and Shiraz?🍇 Shiraz and Syrah are two names for the same grape variety, yet they represent distinct styles influenced by region and climate. Syrah, primarily grown in cooler climates like the Rhône Valley in France, produces wines that are more restrained and elegant, with black pepper and savoury notes of olives and smoked meat. In contrast, Shiraz, predominantly cultivated in warmer regions such as Australia and South Africa, yields bolder, fruit-forward wines with pronounced flavours of ripe blackberries and plums, often accompanied by spicy and jammy characteristics, with softer tannins. The choice of name often reflects the winemaker’s stylistic approach, with Syrah indicating a traditional, old-world influence, while Shiraz signifies a richer, new-world expression.

I recently found myself engrossed in a documentary about winemaking, and let me tell you, it was more than just a lesson on grapes and fermentation. The winery owner passionately explained how the location where grapes are planted affects the wine’s attributes. Grapes grown in rocky soil might give the wine a mineral quality, while those from sun-drenched vineyards produce bolder flavors. As I sipped on my own glass of vino, I couldn't help but think about how we humans aren’t so different from these grapes. Just like wine vintages, we too are a product of where we plant ourselves. Our environment shapes us in profound ways, influencing our characteristics, strengths, and even the subtle notes of our personality that manifest in everyday life. Whether we find ourselves in supportive communities or toxic terrains, these surroundings impact how we grow and develop. If you’re feeling a bit tart or overwhelmed, it might be time to check your soil. Are you planted in a place that nourishes you or one that drains you? So, here’s a vintage tip: Choose your soil wisely. Surround yourself with people and environments that bring out your best qualities. Just as a fine wine becomes better with the right terroir, you too will flourish in the right conditions. Don’t be afraid to uproot and replant yourself if needed. After all, life is too short to settle for anything less than the richness you deserve. Cheers to finding the perfect soil! #PlantYourselfWell #LifeVintage #ChooseYourSoil #GrowthMindset #LivingYourBestLife #mirandism #unapologetic #unapologeticdude
