MITRE’s Center for Data-Driven Policy will be issuing a series of papers over the next several months to inform presidential transition teams from both parties on key science and technology topics. Our cyber defense paper was just issued! It recommends securing our critical infrastructures, focusing on zero trust and SBOMS, preparing for quantum computing, and clarifying and strengthening authorities of our key cyber leaders and organizations. In late 2016, I got a call from Ted Weissberg, the CEO at risk management training and certification leader ACAMS, who was finishing up what had been a terrific run at that business. Ted had an unusual proposal for Spectrum … that we should partner up to find the next great company in the online training and workforce development world. We narrowed our focus to the cyber industry. Cyber has a big, fast-growing, and dynamic end market, which means that professionals need ongoing education to stay current. It also has a well-documented talent gap – employers consistently report 50% of skilled cyber positions are unfilled, and 5M new cyber jobs will be needed to address employer hiring requirements over the coming years. Spectrum set out on a 12+ month project to reach out to and meet with the best businesses serving this end market… culminating in our investment in OffSec. In the online training world, the above ‘ingredients’ can sometimes produce a truly special company … one that practitioners covet for its dynamic content that builds their skills and fuels their career growth. And one with that employers look to as the gold standard in online learning partners, helping them hire and maintain highly skilled, well-trained teams. OffSec is all of these things and more in the cyber world. We’re incredibly fortunate to have partnered with and backed the company over the past 5+ years. We also want to extend our deep gratitude to talented CEO ning wang, who Spectrum first got to know at portfolio company Lynda.com. Ning brought to OffSec a unique combination of online learning and cyber domain expertise from her time at HackerOne. She helped OffSec assemble a world class management team that has driven many market innovations and has transformed the business into the market leader that it is today. Today OffSec is announcing the next chapter in its growth story, via a partnership and significant transaction with Leeds Equity. While Spectrum will no longer be an investor in the business, we’ll be rooting for OffSec, Ning and Leeds going forward and can’t wait to see what they are able to accomplish together. #Congrats to Imran Umar of Booz Allen Hamilton, one of our Top Cyber Execs to watch in 2024. As agencies initially struggled to operationalize zero trust, Umar led the development of the Booz Allen zero trust accelerator program, providing federal agencies a method to rapidly assess their current zero trust maturity against CISA and DOD CIO zero trust guidance, identify their biggest security gaps, and develop and implement zero trust roadmaps and blueprints. The effort achieved success by combining deep client mission insights, operational experience with cutting-edge zero trust technology vendors, and a proven architecture approach developed based on threat vectors.
